Klecker Leads Buffs on Final Day of Husky Classic

February 11, 2017 | Track and Field

SEATTLE, WASH. — Joe Klecker and Dani Jones led the University of Colorado track team on the final day of the Husky Classic here Saturday posting some of the top times in the Nation in the 3,000 meters.

WHAT HAPPENED:
Joe Klecker recorded a huge personal record on Saturday to win the men's 3,000. He clocked a 7:51.43 to take the title and drop eight seconds off his previous PR. Klecker, now has the sixth fastest 3,000 time in the Nation and has moved into fourth all-time for CU. The 3,000 was loaded with Buffs, coming in right behind Klecker was Ben Saarel posting a time of 7:53.74 to finish in third, while Zach Perrin placed sixth with a PR of 7:55.68.

On the women's side, Dani Jones put together an incredible 3,000 race finishing in second with a strong time of 9:02.22. She is now the second fastest 3,000-meter performer in school history coming in behind Jenny Barringer. This time also puts her in second in the nation as well. Coming in right behind Jones in the event was Erin Clark clocking a 9:05.93, which moves her into third all time for CU and ranked in the top five in the country. She finished in sixth place overall.

Colorado freshman Sage Hurta became the third fastest CU women's mile performer Saturday, clocking a 4:38.39. Hurta, who has only raced once in the indoor season, improved on her 4:49.27 personal best from last week's CU Open. The only CU women who have ever run faster than Hurta are Jenny (Barringer) Simpson, who owns the record at 4:25.91 from 2009 and Emma Coburn (4:29.86), who ran her PR in 2013. Joining Hurta in the mile was Tabor School who place 14th with a time of 4:41.23 while Madison Boreman (4:45.80) and Kaleigh Kroeker (4:55.54) both clocked a PR times. On the men's side Eduardo Herrera also tabbed a PR mile time of 4:05.25.

NOTABLE: HERO OF THE MEET
"The hero of the day was Zach Perrin," head coach Mark, Wetmore said. "Although he didn't run as fast as he hoped to in the 3,000 meters he did it with a broken arm. He tripped at the start of the race; fell very hard, they called the race back. I asked him if he was okay, he replied no, but he wanted to race. He ended up running a very fast time today with a broken arm."

Zach Perrin placed sixth in the elite field in the 3,000 meters with a time of 7:55.68. This time is a PR for him by more than 15 seconds.

TYSON INVITATIONAL
There was also a small group of CU athletes competing at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. Alexandria Peters put together a strong performance in the 200 meters clocking a time of 24.56 only .04 seconds off her PR time. Among an elite field Peters finished in 29th place.

Rajon O'Quinn competed in the invitational of the high jump and with tough competition cleared a height of 5-7/1.70 to finish in 9th place.

QUOTEABLE
Head Coach Mark Wetmore:
Overall
Many many good performances. Far too many to list. Sage Hurta true freshman running 4:38.39 is now third all-time for CU with some really good people behind her. Some Olympians behind her. Wonderful run for her and this is only her second race of the season.

On Joe Klecker
Good run for Joe Klecker, our only winner out there in a very prestigious meet. So to win an event out here is special and doesn't happen often. 7:51.43 is a huge personal best for him, probably gets into the NCAA, and he is already in for the mile so that would be great if he could get in for both.

On the Women's 3,000
The best event for us this weekend was the women's 3,000 with Dani Jones running a 9:02.22. She is No. 2 now in CU history behind only Jenny Barringer who broke the American college record. So, 9:02.22 is an incredible time for her. Right behind her was Erin Clark with a 9:05.93, third best in Colorado. Those two times will most likely get into the NCAA. Four marks out of the meet that will qualify for NCAA's.

On the Tyson Invitational
I think the highlight of Arkansas was Isaiah's hurdles, his 8.13 was his best for us. It looks like he is making nice progress and can maybe make the finals in the MPSF.
