February 03, 2017 | Track and Field

BOULDER— Andrew Ghizzone and Isaiah Oliver battled for the men's Heptathlon title here Friday as they went No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, at the Sklar Family Track in the Indoor Practice Facility. The duo also added three indoor heptathlon school records.

WHAT HAPPENED:
Isaiah Oliver headed into Friday's competition in the No. 1 slot with a total point score of 2,916 with victories in the 60 meters and long jump. Oliver clocked a 6.99 in the 60 meters, and now owns the school heptathlon school record in the event. Andrew Ghizzone sat in fourth place overall heading into Friday with 2,673 points.

Friday morning, Oliver added another victory and heptathlon school record in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.15 beating Gran Cleghorn's record of 8.33 from 1996. Oliver was still in first place heading into the pole vault, Ghizzone's best event.

Andrew Ghizzone felt good Friday in the pole vault as he recorded a PR height of 16-0.75/4.90. He extended his own school pentathlon record in the event breaking his record of 15-09.00. Ghizzone moved into first place with 4,406 points and didn't let up. Oliver and Ghizzone battled it out in the 1,000 meters where Ghizzone clocked a 2:45.15 to take first and close out his heptathlon with 5223 points to Olivers' 5113 points.

Multiple PR's were collected today. In the men's high jump Giancarlo Narvarte cleared a height of 6-7/2.01m to earn a new PR in the event. He tied for second with Colorado State's Trenton Wallace. Greyson Webber had a huge day in the weight throw with a PR mark of 56-2.75/17.13. Also in the weight throw earning a PR mark was Caleb Penner who threw for a 42-9.75/13.04. On the women's side Elisa Grandenmange threw for a 54-8.5/16.67 mark which gave her a new best mark in the event.

QUOTABLE (CU Assistant Coach Lindsey Malone):
On Andrew Ghizzone
"(His pole vault) is phenomenal. It pushed him out front. We've been looking for that vault for a while. He's had tremendous practices where his technical knowledge is getting bigger everyday. Yesterday was a little bit of a rough day for him. We talked today about taking a couple vaults and saving his legs a little more but each vault he took he said he was feeling better so we went through this more as a training run for him. His second day today was better than his second day at Mines where he set the school record."

On Isaiah Oliver
"He's a fun person and a fun competitor. He's really easy to work with, he's incredibly coachable He had great prep from football to get him ready to go. The fun part about him is he has great technical background but I can tell him something and he'll change it immediately. It's a really big deal for us because we don't have a lot of time so he doesn't have the luxury of having weeks of repetition to figure it out. He and Andrew get along so well so it's going to be fun to see them going back and forth, vying for school records."
