Buffs Stampede Past St. Mary’s With Record Setting Performance

April 21, 2017 | Lacrosse

MORAGA, Calif. – Ninth-ranked Colorado flexed its muscle against conference foe St. Mary's on Friday night, netting a 24-5 win to break the Buffaloes single-game goals record, which had been 23.

The win is the 14th of the season for Colorado, which is now the school record for wins in a season. CU improved to 14-2 overall and 6-1 in MPSF play. SMC is now 1-12 (0-7 MPSF).

Colorado received goals from 13 different players, including four from junior Darby Kiernan. Kiernan also tallied a game-best seven points with three assists.

WHAT HAPPENED: CU did not waste time as Katie Macleay found the back of the net less than a minute into the game (29:29). Carly Cox scored back-to-back goals (28:36, 27:24) before Kiernan notched her first marker of the day at 27:10.

The Buffs offensive did not slow down. Miranda Stinson tallied a goal at 23:13 and a short time later (21:54), Kiernan netted her second of the day, forcing the Gaels to take a timeout. The break did not slow CU down as Kiernan came back with her second straight goal, her third of the day, at 20:30.

The goals just kept coming for CU. Before the first 10 minutes of play were over, Johnna Fusco added a goal to give the Buffs a commanding 8-0 advantage. Blair Sisk recorded her first of the game just after at 18:12.

St. Mary's ended CU's scoring run of nine straight goals with its first of the day right after Sisk's first goal. But the Buffs responded with another five straight (Fusco, Sisk, Macleay, Kiernan and Stinson) to go up 14-1. The Gaels tallied their second marker of the day with 3:52 left in the first half, but CU netted the final goal of the half with Jen Mistretta's second goal of the season.

CU picked up where it left off in the second half, although its line-up had changed. Freshman Audrey Kingdom tallied her first career goal at 28:33 and another freshman, Holly Sutherland, recorded just the second of her career a short time later. Emily Knapp tallied her fourth goal of her season at 21:01, which put the Buffs up 18-2.

Sutherland found the back of the net for the second time of the day at 19:05 before Sophia Castillo tallied back-to-back goals, lifting CU to a 21-2 advantage. SMC scored two of the next three goals. In between the Gaels' goals, Caroline Perry tallied a goal for the Buffs. Sisk recorded her hat-trick at 3:59, pushing CU to a 23-4 lead before Maddie DeWinter tallied the 24th marker of the day for the Buffs, her first this season, which broke their single game scoring record.

SMC scored its fifth goal right as time expired.

The Buffs used two goalkeepers in the win. Paige Soenksen started the game and allowed two goals on three shots. Sophia Gambitsky came in to start the second half and allowed three goals on four shots.

KEY STATISTICS: Colorado dominated all aspects of the game. The Buffs out-shot the Gaels 42-14, which included 27 shots in the first half alone. CU also led in ground balls (19-8), draw controls (17-12), free-position shots (4-11 – SMC was 0-4), and CU had just eight turnovers compared to SMC's 17.
