Women Golfers Earn NCAA Regional Invite

April 27, 2017 | Women's Golf

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's golf team was invited to the NCAA Championships for the fourth straight year here Thursday as the Buffaloes will compete in the Columbus Regional, May 8-10 in Columbus, Ohio.

The Buffaloes, ranked No. 20 in the country in the latest Golfstat poll (No. 21 Golfweek), earned a No. 5 seed in the 72-team field and will look to advance to the NCAA Championships finals for the first time since 2012. After finishing second in a very competitive Pac-12 Championships the Buffs are prepared for their next challenge: NCAA regionals hosted by Ohio State.

"If you told me at the beginning of the year that our girls would finish second in the Pac-12, I would take it," head coach Anne Kelly said smiling. "I am so proud of the team, this spring they have been just steadily improving and working really hard and I am so proud of them. And now to get to take them to Columbus is exciting!"

The Buffaloes' postseason invitation marks the seventh straight year CU has sent either a team or individual to a regional and the seventh time in program history a team has qualified.

"In my career I have [played this course], I actually played there and my team finished second in the NCAA," Kelly said. "In my first year coaching I also took a golfer there so I am familiar with the course. It's a big long golf course and it is more of the grass we are used to. So I am excited! Let's go to Columbus."

A total of 384 participants have been selected for regional competition. Of these players, 132 will advance to the championships finals. Six teams and three individuals will advance from each regional.

Colorado is one of 18 teams slated to square off at OSU Golf Club's Scarlet Course in the 54-hole tournament format. A group of six golfers will also compete as individuals. One 18-hole round will be played each of the three days. The field does not include any other Pac-12 schools. The top seed Florida is currently the No. 4 ranked team in the country in the latest Golfstat poll. The field includes six teams in the top-25 including the No. 2 seed Florida State, No. 3 seed South Carolina, No. 4 seed Arkansas and the No. 6 seed in Texas A&M. The remaining schools, in order of seeding from seven to 18 are: Purdue, Ohio State, Michigan, San Jose State, Houston, Louisville, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Old Dominion, Delaware, Missouri State, Cleveland State.
