Buffs Impress at First Day of Silverado Showdown
April 09, 2017 | Women's Golf
NAPA CALIF. - Three Buffs currently sit in the top-15 individually and The University of Colorado women's golf team is in 3rd after the first round of the 2017 Silverado Showdown, hosted by CU and Oregon.
Â
The Buffaloes shot a 2-over 290 on the par 72, 6,176-yard course at the Silverado Resort and Spa. No. 3 ranked Stanford leads the competitive field that includes 11 teams ranked in the top-50 of golfweek's poll. The Cardinal shot a 5-under par 283, while UCLA is one stroke back and the only other team to shoot under par at 4-under 284. Oregon and CU both had the third best round of the day coming in at 290. No. 13 ranked Northwestern rounds out the teams in the top-5 as they are one stroke behind the Buffs at 291.
Â
"Brittany and Esther played very good golf today and could have had rounds in the 60s if a few more putts would have dropped," head coach Anne Kelly said. "Kirsty played very solid as well, very consistent. Overall I'm really proud of how the team hung tough today on a highly challenging course."
Â
Brittany Fan and Esther Lee both are currently tied for 10th place shooting a 1-under par 71. Lee had a very strong front nine recording three birdies and four pars to begin her back nine at 1-under. Lee fired out seven pars and a birdie on the back to keep her at 1-under 71 for the first round.
Â
Fan had a consistent first day rallying off 11 pars to also finish at 1-under 71. Fan struggled a little bit on hole No. 5 and 6 recording back to back bogeys but settled in to fire off two birdies to close out her front nine.
Â
Freshman Kirsty Hodgkins is the third Buff sitting in the top-15 of the competition coming in at even par 72. Like her teammates, Hodgkins struggled a little bit on the front nine recording three bogeys. But her back nine were very strong as she fired off seven pars and two birdies to finish at even par.
Â
Robyn Choi had a strong rebound performance. Choi had a tough time with the front nine holes as she collected two bogeys, along with a double and triple bogey to go 4-over 40 on the front. But Choi settled down and bounced back in strong fashion rallying off seven pars and a birdie to finish the back nine at even par to give her a first-round score of 4-over 76.
Â
"A few of our team members got off to a bit of a slow start today," Kelly said. "But rebounded nicely on the back nine. Robyn struggled on number 3 and 4 and was 6 over after five holes, but hung tough and ended up only 4 over for the day."
Â
Lauryn Keating is tied for 77th at 7-over par 79 first round score. Along with Choi, Keating recorded a triple bogey on the front nine as she struggled at hole No. 9. But just like the rest of her team Keating's back nine were much stronger than the front as she shot even par to close out and keep her at 7-over.
Â
"Gillian unfortunately became very sick yesterday and tried to give it a go, but was not able to play today," Kelly said. "Lauryn who is back in her first event since Feb after a wrist injury, was put into the fifth spot and hung in there very well. She has not played a lot of golf in the last month and had a rough front nine, but really came back with even par on the back."
Â
Action continues at the Silverado Showdown tomorrow, Monday April 10. The Buffs have a 9:00 a.m. MT tee time.
