Buffs Knocked Out of Championship Contention

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – It was a shorter third day of competition in the ITA Regional Championship Friday in Las Vegas with a pair of losses knocking out the remaining doubles team and single player left in the championship hunt for the University of Colorado.

Things started out this morning with an 8-6 loss in the doubles round of 16 with Monica Malinen and Vera Markovic falling to a duo from Northern Arizona. The same team would be knocked out in the following round, leaving a pair of teams from Denver in the top half of the semifinals and a dual between Air Force and Utah to face the Denver team that prevails.

This wasn't the lone time Malinen faced the Northern Arizona opponent today, as the junior faced Chiara Tomasetti of Northern Arizona in the singles play after facing her team in doubles. Malinen fell in straight sets by a score of 6-1, 6-0. In the bottom half of the singles bracket only Tomasetti remains with a player from Utah State, UNLV and Denver.

With the championship end of the tournament finished for Colorado the only remaining matches will feature Megan Forster in the consolation singles tonight and the rest of the team playing in additional matches to boost ITA rankings.
