Mike Phillips Announced as Assistant Coach

February 05, 2018 | Tennis

BOULDER – Colorado women's tennis head coach Nicole Kenneally announced Monday the addition of assistant tennis coach Mike Phillips, who has coached for the United States Tennis Association as the Intermountain Sectional coach and co-leader of USTA's Team Colorado.

"I am really excited to have Coach Phillips back in Boulder," said Kenneally. "He was the men's assistant when I came to Boulder and one of the first people I met. He and his family have always been a part of the Buff family but to have him working alongside me is fantastic. He knows what it means to be a Buff and will also share his knowledge and passion for tennis and CU with our team."

Phillips began his Division I coaching career in 1997 as an assistant coach for CU's men's tennis team and spent four years in Boulder. He completed his B.A. in Kinesiology from Colorado in 2000.

"I'm so excited to be a Buff again. I'm very grateful to Coach Kenneally for the opportunity and so happy to be part of the team," said Phillips. "It's so great to be back."

In 2000, Phillips departed for Montana State to take over the head coaching position of the Bobcats' men's tennis team.

Phillips guided Montana State to its first national ranking in school history during his 12 years at the helm. During that time he earned seven coach of the year awards, three BSC Championships and five NCAA Tournament appearances. Most recently, he was named a 2018 Hall of Fame Inductee at Montana State.

After his stint at Montana State, Phillips took over the men's tennis program at the University of Northern Colorado in 2013, coaching the team to its first Big Sky Conference appearance in program history.

Phillips brings 25 years of experience in the tennis profession, including 17 years in Division I tennis, to the Buffaloes.
