Ronaldson Wins As Buffs Fall To Trojans

April 06, 2018 | Tennis

BOULDER – Colorado's tennis team fell to 40th-ranked Southern California, 6-1, on Friday afternoon here at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center. The Buffaloes dropped to 8-8 overall and 1-5 in the Pac-12, while the Trojans moved to .500 in conference play at 3-3 and 10-7 overall.

DOUBLES: The Buffs could not hold off the Trojans in doubles play. USC clinched the doubles point on court No. 3 to take an early 1-0 lead into singles play. The Trojans' Madison Westby and Constance Branstine held off seniors Louise Ronaldson and Kyra Wojcik for a 6-3 win.

At the No. 2 position, USC's Gabby Smith and Becca Weissmann handled juniors Jeannez Daniel and Ilana Oleynik for a 6-3 win.

In No. 1 doubles, junior Brigitte Beck and sophomore Chloe Hule battled with the No. 32-ranked pairing of Rianna Valdes Angela Kulikov. Valdes and Kulikov held a 5-3 lead when the doubles point was clinched.

SINGLES: The No. 35 ranked Smith overtook Huang at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-3 and put the Trojans up 2-0 with the win. After falling to 5-2 deficit in the second set, Huang and Smith split the final two games.

After falling in the first set, 6-2, on court No. 3, Daniel jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in set No. 2 over Weissmann. Daniel continued to dominate in the final three games to take the second set, 6-1. The final set was all Weissmann as she won the final three games for the 6-2 win.

In the first set of the No. 2 singles match, Hule and 92nd-ranked Valdes battled to a 3-3 tie before Valdes ran away with a 6-4 win. Hule flipped the script in the second set, grabbing a 4-2 lead early on. The two split the next two games before Hule prevailed with a 6-3 win. After a 2-2 tie in the final set, Valdes took control down the stretch for a 6-3 win and a clinch of the match.

Westby handled Wojcik on court No. 5 in a 6-2, 6-1 win. In the first set, Westby raced out to a 5-0 lead before Wojcik won two straight games. Westby held on, however, for a 6-2 win.

Ronaldson took an early lead over Kulikov at the No. 4 singles position with a 6-2 win in the first set as she won six of the final seven games after falling behind 0-1.
Kulikov picked up the first three games of set No. 2 before Ronaldson strung together three straight herself to lock the score up at 3-3. The two then split the next two games for a 4-4 tie before Kulikov won the final two and the set, 6-4. In the overtime, Ronaldson ran out to a 4-1 lead before Kulikov responded to tie it up at 7-7. Ronaldson then won three of the next four points to take the overtime, 10-8, for the win.

Branstine breezed to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Beck in the No. 6 singles match.

NOTES: CU has now dropped six straight matches after opening the season 8-2 ... CU has now lost the doubles point in three straight matches and is now 10-5 on doubles points ... the Buffs are now 0-11 all-time vs. USC, though the point CU scored today was the second against the Trojans since joining the Pac-12.

UP NEXT: CU finishes up the weekend with a home match against the UCLA Bruins on Sunday, April 8. The time and location of the match have not been announced due to possible inclement weather. Check the Colorado Buffaloes Women's Tennis Facebook and Twitter accounts for updates.

POSTMATCH QUOTES:
Nicole Kenneally, head coach

On the match
"Obviously, we came onto the court wanting to get the win. But, overall, we competed in a lot of the positions. If you go down the line or if you were here at the match you were able to witness how competitive the matches were. They definitely got us in a lot of awkward positions during the singles matchups. But, overall, we are competing. We're not just participating, we're competing, and we will continue to compete. If you look down the line, we had two or three setters that we lose and Louise Ronaldson wins a third set tiebreaker. It's just one of those things you have to keep working on. We have to keep showing up every day and ultimately you just have to keep believing that they're going to roll."

On what can be taken from the match against USC into Sunday's matchup against UCLA
"It's the idea that a team is ranked in the teens, twenties or thirties, etc. that we can compete with them. We have another opportunity on Sunday against UCLA and we look forward to it. We've got a day in between to rejuvenate and refresh a little bit, we'll come out and get ready to compete again on Sunday."

On Louise Ronaldson's tiebreaker set
"She's been so close in so many Pac-12 matchups, she really wanted that match ball. It was really exciting to get to see her do that. It was a great game style. It was a lot of fun to watch and we've continued to encourage her to play that kind of game style. To see her forced into playing that was great and she really stepped up to the plate and played well. Hopefully it continues, and she continues to bring that forward."
