No. 14 UCLA Takes Down Buffs At Home
April 08, 2018 | Tennis
BOULDER – No. 14 UCLA earned a 7-0 win over Colorado on Sunday at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center. The Buffs dropped below .500 for the first time this season, slipping to 8-9 overall and 1-6 in the Pac-12, while the Bruins moved to 14-4 and 6-1.
DOUBLES: UCLA made quick work of No. 1 doubles to jump out to an early lead for the doubles point. 10th-ranked Terri Fleming and Jada Hart blanked the Buffs at the top position 6-0.
The Bruins clinched the point at No. 3 doubles as Gabby Andrews and Ena Shibahara won 6-2 over Louise Ronaldson and Kyra Wojcik. Trailing 4-1, CU won a break back to cut the deficit to 4-2. But UCLA bounced right back and took the final two games.
Jeannez Daniel and Ilana Oleynik trailed Abi Altick and Ayan Broomfield 4-2 when play completed at No. 2 doubles.
SINGLES: Fleming gave UCLA at 2-0 lead with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Daniel at No. 3 singles. The first set was back-and-forth until Fleming took the final three games. After holding off Fleming on deuce point on serve to open the second set, Daniel dropped six of the final seven games.
Hule and 33rd-ranked Hart were very even throughout their match at No. 2 singles, particularly in the second set. Hart jumped out to a 4-1 lead with an early break but Hule stormed back, taking three straight games to even the set at 4-4. Twice in the set Hule faced double-match point before forcing a tiebreaker. Hart eventually prevailed 6-3, 7-6 (3) to give the Bruins a 3-0 lead.
UCLA clinched the match with No. 1 singles as 11th-ranked Shibahara snuck past Huang 7-5, 7-5. Huang battled back in both sets, recovering from a 5-2 deficit in the first to win three straight games, and battling back from a 5-3 deficit in the second. Twice she faced match point down 5-4 but Huang held on to force two more games.
Louise Ronaldson dropped a 6-3, 6-3 match at No. 4 singles to 50th-ranked Altick. Oleynik lost 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 to Andrews and Beck closed out the match with a tough loss in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 against Broomfield.
NOTES: CU dropped to 0-8 all-time vs. UCLA ... it was the seventh straight loss for the Buffs this season.
UP NEXT: CU will travel to Oregon for a 2:30 p.m. MT match on Friday in Eugene.

On playing the No. 14 team in the country
"UCLA came out and played great in the doubles. We got behind early and they got on top of us and secured that point comfortably. Singles-wise, playing inside the bubble, you have your No. 1, 2 and 3 out there [first]. We competed, 5 and 5, 3 and 6, 5 and 2 [set scores in the top three positions]. Again, we're in all of those matches. Like I told the team afterwards, we competed hard. It was just a matter of they're a little more disciplined in the big points and I think we can say that is one reason why they're UCLA. We've got to continue to learn. It's a process, it's a journey and you've got to continue to play people, see what they do that you like, and say, 'hey, I need to do that,' or realize, 'hey, she really exploited me in this area and I've got to get that better.' And that continues to be motivation. And that's what we've challenged them to."
On the play of Huang and Hule in two close matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles
"[Shibahara and Hart] have won a lot of national events. Linda and Chloe showed great resiliency. They keep coming back and they have to keep coming back. That's the beauty of playing in the Pac-12. You know you're going to keep playing these tough, tough opponents. You should be thriving in that environment and continuing to learn."
