No. 30 Oregon Tops Buffs 4-0
April 13, 2018 | Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – Colorado's women's tennis team suffered a 4-0 defeat on Friday at No. 30 Oregon. The Buffs dropped to 8-10 overall and 1-7 in the Pac-12, while the Ducks improved to 13-8 and 4-5.
After playing indoors for the past four matches, the Buffs played outdoors at Oregon's Student Tennis Center on Friday.
DOUBLES: The Ducks cruised to a quick doubles point, earning a 6-1 win by Julia Lilien and Paiton Wagner at No. 3, followed by a 6-0 win by 81st-ranked Rifanty Kahfiani and Alyssa Tobita at No. 2.
SINGLES: The Buffs were playing shorthanded without No. 4 singles player Louise Ronaldson, who was injured earlier this week. Oregon was able to take advantage at the bottom of CU's lineup with three Buffs moving up in the lineup to fill that position.
As a result, the Ducks clinched the match with two of the bottom three positions, along with a win at the No. 3 spot. Kahfiani put Oregon up 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Ilana Oleynik at No. 6 singles.
The final two points came just moments apart at No. 4 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Daniela Nasser earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kyra Wojcik at the fourth position. Wojcik won the first game in the second set before Nasser took the final six. Lilien clinched the match at No. 3, topping Jeannez Daniel 6-4, 6-1. Daniel made a comeback in the first set after trailing 4-1 to get within 4-3, but that was as close as the match would be the remainder of the day. Lilien jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second set to pull away.
By playing the match to clinch, the two teams spoiled a strong effort from CU's Linda Huang at No. 1 singles. She was on her way to forcing a third set with 49th-ranked Tobita, dropping the first set 6-4 before leading 4-1 in the second when play was completed.
NOTES: CU has lost its past eight matches ... after starting the season 10-2 in doubles points, CU has dropped the doubles point in five straight matches.
UP NEXT: The Buffs will return home to take on Denver in non-conference action on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at CU's South Campus Tennis Complex.
POSTMATCH QUOTES:
Nicole Kenneally, head coach
"Hats off to Oregon as they came out and played a quality match on their home courts. They have two nationally-ranked doubles pairs and really took advantage from that standpoint. It's been a tough semester with weather and we need to keep working and learning and adjusting from in-to-out and out-to-in and day-to-day with these changes."
