Huang Knocks Off Ranked Opponent, But Buffs Fall To DU
April 17, 2018 | Tennis
BOULDER – Colorado's women's tennis team suffered a 4-1 loss to Denver on Tuesday at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center in Boulder. The Buffs dropped to 8-11 overall, while DU improved to 17-4.
DOUBLES: Denver's Bianca Mok and Camille Verden-Anderson made quick work at No. 3 doubles, giving the Pioneers an early edge towards the doubles point with a 6-1 win over Louise Ronaldson and Kyra Wojcik. After splitting the first two sets, DU's doubles pair won the final five games.
DU clinched the point at No. 2 doubles as Hada Chang and Anna Riedmiller topped Jeannez Daniel and Ilana Oleynik 6-3. CU held a 3-2 lead, but DU took the next four games, including two breaks.
SINGLES: DU's lead went from 1-0 to 3-0 moments apart just over two hours into the contest. Chang earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over Daniel at No. 3. The first set was even throughout as seven of the nine games went to deuce point, with Chang taking five of those. Daniel fell behind 3-0 in the third set before taking her only game of the frame.
Just one minute after No. 3 singles completed, Mok earned a win for DU at No. 2 singles, topping Chloe Hule 6-4, 6-3. Hule jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first, but Mok took the next four games to pull comfortably in front. In the second set, the two players split the first seven sets as Mok led 4-3 with each player holding serve, but Mok earned a break to bring the set to 5-3 and then held serve to get the straight-set victory.
At No. 1 singles, Linda Huang extended the match for CU and earned her second win over a ranked opponent this season, defeating 52nd-ranked O'Loughlin 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (5). Up 4-3 in the first, Huang earned her first break and then held on for the 6-4 win. O'Loughlin came out strong in the second, winning the first four games before the two split the final four.
In the third set, Huang went down 2-1 on a controversial call that delayed the match several minutes while things were sorted out. At deuce point with the set tied 1-1, O'Loughlin's ball appeared to go long and Huang claimed she called the ball out. But neither the umpire nor O'Loughlin heard the out call and the point was awarded to O'Loughlin, giving her a 2-1 lead and a break in the set.
Huang responded by immediately winning the break back and going up 3-2, and she later led 5-3 before O'Loughlin rallied to force the tiebreaker. O'Loughlin had a bit of luck on her side in the third set, winning all three deuce points.
In the tiebreaker, Huang trailed 4-2 before recovering to win five of the final six points.
The match was completed at No. 5 singles as Arisha Ladhani swept Wojcik 6-2, 6-1. Both sets started out on track for Wojcik, but Ladhani finished strong. Wojcik was even 2-2 in the first set before dropping the final four sets. Ladhani dropped the first game in the second before taking the next five, and then breaking Wojcik's serve to win the match.
NOTES: Huang snapped a seven-match losing streak at No. 1 singles and earned her second win over a ranked opponent this season ... the Buffs are 3-1 this season vs. in-state opponents (CSU, UNC, Air Force and DU) ... CU lost its ninth consecutive match ... after starting the season 10-2 in doubles points, CU has dropped the doubles point in six straight matches ... CU dropped to 30-12 all-time vs. Denver, but has lost three straight in the series.
UP NEXT: CU will wrap up the regular season on Saturday at home vs. Utah at 11 a.m.

On facing a team that came in 16-4
"Denver's had a good year so far. They came in with a lot of wins under their belt. Unfortunately, we walked into this match with a few losses under our belt, being in Pac-12 season. It's tough sometimes for girls of this age to keep coming back when you haven't been getting consistent results. It doesn't matter how much you talk about how competitive someone's being—because I think we've been really competitive in the Pac-12 season. Unfortunately, some of those haven't turned into wins. We've had some of our best results against some of the teams in the Pac-12, but a loss is a loss and losing isn't fun. Everyone feels great after a win, just like Linda feels great after this win today. Winning changes everything. People love winners.
On Linda Huang
"They played in the fall and their match in the fall was on a slower court and I think that match lasted 2.5 or three hours. It was a little closer than today because points were going 15-20 shots on a slower court, compared to today, quicker points on a faster court go quicker and the duration of shots was maybe 3-5 shots. It was a different type of match, but Linda was well aware of who she was playing and what kind of game she plays and what her strengths and weaknesses are. It was probably the most composed match [Linda] has played all year. It's great that she did that at home. There was a little bit of controversy at the beginning of the third set that didn't go her way and she rebounded well from that and took a strong lead in the set, being up 5-3. Then Julia came out and played two terrific games. But Linda stayed steady and composed and did a great job. Even in the tiebreak, she was down 4-2 and she just kept hanging around and staying aggressive and doing what she wanted on the court."
On the controversial call in the third set for Huang being a turning point
"Situations like that can sometimes motivate for the positive or it can have a real detractive effect. For Linda, it was a real positive. She did a really good job of going out there and using that energy for her benefit."

On the match
"As a team, we fought hard and it's always good to play another Colorado team, but unfortunately we didn't come out with a win. Personally in my singles match, it was just about making returns and staying consistent and applying pressure to her serve. In the third set, it was great to end up pulling it through, but overall it was a great match. It's been a tough season individually, but I'm happy. I came out today like it was just another match for me, focused, and one point at a time. I was happy with the way I played and I'm really happy to get the win.
