Shorthanded Buffs Fall 6-1 to No.19-ranked Syracuse

February 15, 2019 | Tennis

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The University of Colorado women's tennis team fell to No.19-ranked Syracuse this afternoon in Syracuse, N.Y., by a score of 6-1.

The Buffaloes (4-4), who were without senior Annabelle Andrinopoulos for the match, fought hard against Syracuse (5-4) and picked up the lone point in the No. 3 singles match with Megan Forster defeating Maria Tritou in three sets. Forster found herself down after losing the opening set 6-2, but rallied back with consecutive 6-3 sets to take the victory.

The Orange began the match up in the doubles matches with a win by forfeit in the No.3 doubles match. They secured the team point after winning the No.2 doubles match by a score of 6-2 with Dina Hegab and Guzal Yusupova defeating Sara Nayar and Megan Forster. Monica Malinen and Tallulah Farrow were up on No.48 and No.67-ranked singles players Gabriela Knutson and Miranda Ramirez, respectfully, by a score of 5-4 but the match finished undecided because the doubles point was secured.

With the forfeit in the No.6 singles match due to Andrinopoulos being out Syracuse jumped to a quick 2-0 lead. The next point came in the No.5 singles match with Libi Mesh defeating Ky Ecton 6-0, 6-2. No. 67 Ramirez clinched the team win in the No.2 match with a 6-4, 7-5 victory against Malinen.

Forster secured the first team point in the following match at No.3 singles position, followed by a long three-set match for Sara Nayar in the No.1 singles position. Nayar held her own against the No.48-ranked singles player in the nation, stealing the first set by a score of 7-6 (7). Knutson then took back control of the match and finished the second set by a score of 6-4 and the third at 6-2.

Tallulah Farrow was the final match of the dual, coming back in the No.4 singles match against Dina Hegab after losing the first set 6-4. Farrow won a long second set by a score of 7-6 (8), and the match was decided by a pro set which Hegab won 10-6.

Colorado takes tomorrow off before taking on Cornell and Binghamton at Cornell Sunday morning at 8 a.m. (MT) and 11:30 a.m. (MT).
