Colorado Heads to New York for Three Matches

February 13, 2019 | Tennis

BOULDER – The University of Colorado tennis team will play three matches in New York this weekend, beginning with a match at No.19 -ranked Syracuse Friday at 1 p.m. (MT) and finishing it off Sunday with matches at Cornell against Cornell at 8 a.m. (MT) and Binghamton at 11:30 a.m. (MT).

Colorado is coming off a 1-1 weekend with a 7-0 sweep against Northern Colorado and a 7-0 loss at Denver. In the UNC match, the Buffaloes were dominant top-to-bottom, earning the doubles team point in two matches and taking every singles match with just two sets lost in the process.

Monica Malinen has been a staple for the Buffaloes at the No.4 singles position, winning all six matches there. She moved to the No.3 singles match against Denver and suffered her first defeat of the season.

Also for Colorado, Megan Forster and Sara Nayar each have 5-2 records in dual matches this season. Both women have all five wins in the No.2 and No.3 singles matches.

In the doubles spot, Annabelle Andrinopoulos and Ky Ecton have come together in the No.3 spot and have provided a 3-1 record in the past two weeks. The duo had the lone win at Denver with an impressive 6-0 victory.

The first match of the weekend against No.19-ranked Syracuse (4-4) will prove the most difficult for CU. Syracuse has a 4-2 win against then-ranked No.9 Michigan in late January. Following that performance Syracuse has lost four straight against then-ranked No.19 Virginia (4-3), No.7 Pepperdine (4-3) and No.16 Ohio State (5-2) with a 4-3 loss to Boston College in that span.

The Orange also boast two individuals ranked in the top-100 by ITA. Gabriela Knutson is the No.48 singles play in the nation with a 3-3 record in the No.1 singles matches this season. Miranda Ramirez is the No.67 singles player and is 4-2 in the No.3 singles position. Sofya Golubovskaya has the team's best record at 5-1 in No.2 singles matches.

Cornell is 2-6 this season with a 5-2 win against Army and 6-1 victory over Binghamton earlier this season. Since then the team has four-straight losses, including three in the ECAC Indoor Championships.

Binghamton (0-7) has not won a match this season and has only scored two team points once this season against Sacred Heart. They will play Boston the day before they take on Colorado.

Colorado heads to Boise, Idaho, the following weekend to take on Boise State University and South Dakota University.
