Colorado Finishes 16th At Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge
February 05, 2019 | Women's Golf
PALOS VERDES, Calif. — Despite shooting its best round of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge on Tuesday, the University of Colorado women's golf team was unable to make up any ground and finished 16th.
Â
The Buffs shot a 17-over 301 on Tuesday, bettering their scorecards from the previous two days. CU was a 24-over 308 on Sunday and a 25-over 309 on Monday to finish a 65-over 917. They finished four strokes behind Alabama, which was 15th at 61-over (913), although the Buffs did have a better third round score than the UA, which shot 21-over (305).
Â
Stanford hung on for the win with a three-day scorecard of 295-279-293—867, which was 15-over for the tournament. Pac-12 foe UCLA was just two-strokes back at 869 (291-289-289) and Southern California finished third (299-288-284—871).
Â
The field was extremely competitive and battled through the tough weather conditions on the challenging 6,017-yard, par 71 Palos Verdes Golf Club. Of the 16 teams in the field, 11 are ranked in the top-20. Â
Â
"We got a bit better play today from Malak (Boureada), Kirsty (Hodgkins) and Elle (Otten)," head coach Anne Kelly said. "Unfortunately our seniors struggled with this golf course. It is a Championship course that requires precise shots around the greens. We just have not had the preparation time outdoors to tune up that part of game yet.
Â
"We definitely take away a sense of what areas we need to work on and at least have a good idea of what to expect for the Pac-12 Championship back here in April. This is a tough way to start the spring season, but our players will fight back and work hard to prepare for the next tournaments."
Â
Colorado's highest finisher in the tournament was junior Kirsty Hodgkins, who ended the three-day event with a 12-over 225 to tie for 34th. She had her best round of the tournament on Tuesday, recording 14 pars, 1 birdie, two bogeys and one double, which came on her final hole. She got out to a very strong start, making par on her first eight holes before shooting a pair of bogeys back-to-back. She rebounded on the next hole with her ninth par of the day and then recorded her first birdie of the afternoon to bring her score back to 1-over. From there she tallied five consecutive pars but shot a 6 on a par-4 to finish the round.
Â
Freshman Malak Boureada also recorded her best round of the event on Tuesday, shooting a 1-over 72, which was the best single round score for a Buff in the tournament. Overall, she finished tied for 41st with a 13-over 226 (77-77-72). Her round started on the 15th hole where she sunk her first of two birdies to being the day at 1-under. She made par on the following hole before shooting her second birdie of the round to bring her to 2-under through three holes. She earned another four straight pars before hitting a bit of a rough patch as she tallied three straight bogeys, which brought her to 1-over. Boureada rebounded nicely though, making par on the final eight holes.
Â
Sophomore Elle Otten shot her best round of the tournament too, finishing the day with a 4-over 75. She began the day with three pars and three bogeys before sinking her only birdie of the day to put her at 2-over. She played pretty even for the rest of the round, recording nine pars and two bogeys. Otten's three-day scorecard (80-81-75) put her at a 23-over 236, which tied for 74th with teammate senior Gillian Vance.
Â
Vance (76-80-80) recorded her second 9-over round of the event. She had some issues out of the gate with three bogeys and one double, putting her at 5-over in the first four holes. She made par on the next two holes and shot a birdie on the following hole to bring her back to a 4-over, but unfortunately she couldn't bring it any lower as she recorded five bogeys and six pars to finish the day.
Â
Senior Haley Nist had a rough day, recording a pair of triple bogeys. She did not have any birdies, but made 10 pars and had six bogeys for a 12-over 83 on the day. She finished the tournament 77th with a 25-over 238 (79-76-83).
Â
Andrea Lee (Stanford) hung on for the win after moving into first during the second round on Monday. She finished with a narrow one-stroke lead over Arizona's Yu-Sang Hou and Texas' Agathe Laisne. Lee finished the tournament with an even 213 (70-70-73), while Hou and Laisne were a 1-over 214. Hou's scorecard was 72-71-71, while Laisne's was 69-74-71.
Â
The Buffs will be back in competition, Feb. 18-19, at the Rebel/Beach Invitational at the Spanish Trail Country Club in Las Vegas.
