Buffs in 13th after First Day of the Tar Heel Classic

LA ROMANA, Dominican Republic — The University of Colorado women's golf team struggled through the first two rounds of the Tar Heel Classic Hosted by Suzy Whaley on Friday and is currently 13th in the standings.

"The team is disappointed and will do our best to make a comeback tomorrow," head coach Anne Kelly said. "The bright spots were Elle's (Otten) first round and solid play by Kirsty (Hodgkins). Other than that, we need to learn to respect the course and play the conditions better."

CU posted rounds of 300 and 309 and is 33-over after the first day. The Buffs are four strokes from UNC Wilmington, which is 12th (299-306—605)

Wake Forest, which is ranked 12th in the GolfStat.com poll, is the leader through 36-holes at the 6,140-yard, par 72 Casa de Campo Teeth of the Dog Course. WFU earned a 9-under 567 (282-285) and has a four stroke advantage over 16th-ranked Virginia (284-287—563). The host, No. 40 North Carolina, shot even through the first two rounds (285-291—576) and sits third.

Junior Kirsty Hodgkins is tied for 15th after the first day with a 1-over 145. She shot rounds of 71 and 74, which included a team-best six birdies and 24 pars. She also tallied five bogeys and one double.

Sophomore Elle Otten is second on the team and is currently tied for 45th with an 8-over 152. She shot a 1-over 73 in her first round with 12 pars, three birdies, two bogeys and one double, and then recorded a 7-over 79 in the next round with 11 pars, one birdie, five bogeys and one double. Her first round 73 is her best opening round this season.

A pair of Buffs, seniors Gillian Vance and Haley Nist, are tied for 60th as both finished the day with a 12-over 156. Both recorded back-to-back rounds of 6-over 78s.

Freshman Malak Bouraeda had a rough day after placing second at the Rebel/Beach Invitational last month. She finished the day at 16-over (160) and is tied for 69th after rounds of 79 and 81.

Jennifer Kupcho (Wake Forest) leads the field with a 9-under 135. She recorded a 6-under 66 through the first 18 holes and tallied a 3-under 69 during the following 18. Three strokes behind her is Ohio State's Aneka Seumanutafa, who shot a 6-under 138 (71-67). There are eight other players with scorecards of 1-under or better entering the final round.
