Malinen Named Pac-12 Player of the Week
March 26, 2019 | Tennis
SAN FRANCISCO – The University of Colorado woman's tennis junior Monica Malinen was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon.
Â
Malinen, a junior transfer from Oulu, Finland, becomes the eighth woman in CU history to earn a conference player of the week award and just the second in the Pac-12, joining Tina Bokhua in 2016. Malinen's honor is the 11th in school history and the first for a performance in conference play since Monica Milewski in 2010.
Â
The junior had a perfect weekend, winning both her singles and doubles matches on the road against Arizona and Arizona State. Her performance helped CU win its second-ever Pac-12 road victory with a 4-3 defeat of the Wildcats. The Buffaloes are 2-2 in the Pac-12 this season and are sixth in the conference this season.
Â
Malinen joined up with Annabelle Andrinopoulos and took down two ranked doubles opponents this weekend to take the Buffaloes fourth-straight doubles point. The duo opened the weekend upsetting the 47th-ranked tandem from Arizona 7-5 despite being down 5-4 in the set. The Buffs then clinched the doubles point against Arizona State by handing ASU's Lauryn John-Baptiste and Ilze Hattingh their first loss of the season by taking down the No.2-ranked doubles team 6-4.
Â
Malinen continues her dominance this season with another pair of singles wins this weekend. She defeated Marie Van Aelst of Arizona in the No.3 singles match 6-3, 6-4, then had an improbable comeback against Tereza Kolarova of ASU in the No.3 singles match. Kolarova jumped out to a 6-0 opening set win, then Malinen took over and won 0-6. 6-2, 6-3.
Â
The junior continues to lead the team with a 20-7 individual record in singles play, including 14-3 in duals. She is 5-2 in the No.3 singles spot and 6-0 in the No.4 position.
Â
The Buffaloes continue conference play with a home match against Oregon this Friday at 1:30 p.m.
