Colorado Concludes Regular Season at Utah

April 18, 2019 | Tennis

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's tennis team travels to Utah this Saturday to conclude the regular season against the No.48-ranked Utes at 11 a.m.

The Buffaloes (10-12, 3-6 Pac-12) are looking to lock in the seventh position in the Pac-12 Championships that begin next week. The Utes (12-10, 2-7 Pac-12) are currently ninth while CU is eighth. This match will be an important one as most scenarios have the two teams matched up against one another in the first round of the Pac-12 Championships on Wednesday.

Colorado is being led by doubles pair Annabelle Andrinopoulos and Monica Malinen. The two are ranked 20th in the nation in doubles with a 6-3 overall record that includes three wins against ranked opponents. The two will have to continue their streak of two-straight ranked doubles wins this weekend if their national hopes are to continue. They will face the No.81-ranked pair in Madison Tattini and Brianna Chisholm.

The Buffaloes also are led by freshman Sara Nayar who has returned to the rankings as the 100th-ranked player. She is 12-8 this season with a 3-4 record against nationally ranked opponents. Last weekend she upset another top-40 individual against Cal. Colorado will turn to her for needed points for their second ranked win of the season.

Malinen has been a staple of success for the Buffaloes with a 21-9 singles record this season. She has moved into the No.2 singles position and has a 4-3 record for CU there.

Utah began the season with an 8-2 record, including a pair of four straight wins. They upset Washington State the same weekend that CU did but have fallen to every other conference opponent except Oregon. Excluding the Oregon match, Utah has only been able to score a point against a Pac-12 opponent since the opening weekend twice, in a 4-1 loss to Arizona and a 6-1 loss to Cal.

Colorado will play Wednesday in Ojai, Calif., with the eight-nine match beginning at 9 a.m. (PT), followed by the noon seven vs. 10 match and the 3 p.m. The Buffs have locked in a spot in the seventh through ninth spot.
