Colorado Set to Take on Washington State

April 22, 2019 | Tennis

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's tennis team will play No.35-ranked Washington State Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. (MT) in Ojai, Calif., for the first round of the 2019 Pac-12 Championships.

The Buffaloes (10-13, 3-7 Pac-12) secured the eighth seed after entering a three-way tie with Utah and Washington State. The Cougars fell to the ninth seed after losing to Washington in the season finale, setting up a matchup for the two with the winner set to take on the defending national champions and Pac-12 regular season champion Stanford Thursday at 1 p.m. (MT).

CU was able to take down Washington State this season at home when the Cougs were ranked 28th in the nation. Colorado picked up the win in a 4-3 battle that included a Buff doubles point and wins from Sara Nayar against the then-ranked 38th player in the nation, Annabelle Andrinopoulos and Tallulah Farrow.

Colorado will rely on strong doubles play once against with Andrinopoulos and Monica Malinen trying to keep their national hopes alive after last weekend's loss. The 20th-ranked pair in the nation fell to the No.81 ranked team from Utah but have a chance for retribution with WSU's top pair ranked 47th. Nayar, the 100th-ranked player in the nation, will be key as she was in the regular season win as she takes on Michaela Bayerlova once again, now ranked 32nd in the nation.

The Buffaloes have lost their past five matches, all against ranked teams. Malinen continues to lead the team with a 21-10 record this season. She is 4-4 recently in the No.2 singles position and 15-6 in duals this season. Nayar is second on the team with a 13-9 dual record, including a 4-5 record in the No.1 position in Pac-12 play. She is 3-5 against nationally ranked opponents.

Bayerlova leads the Washington State team this season but is joined in the rankings by the 47th-ranked doubles pair in Hikaru Sato and Tiffany Mylonas. The Cougs picked up key wins this season at home, including a 6-1 rout of Arizona and a 4-2 upset of No.10 UCLA.
