Five Enter Pac-12 Multi Championships

Throwers head to Air Force Twilight
BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program sends five individuals in the Pac-12 Championships heptathlon and decathlon this weekend in Tucson.

Three senior women will compete in their final Pac-12 Championships when Michaela Wenning, Maja Wichhart-Donzo and Drianna Mustin begin the heptathlon Saturday at 5 p.m (PT). Freshman Josh Farmer will compete in his first Pac-12 Championships in the decathlon which begins at 5:30 p.m. (PT) alongside Wyatt Rhoads.

Wenning and Wichart-Donzo are the 14th and 17th-ranked heptathletes in the nation right now with the top-24 heading straight to the NCAA National Championships. The duo both to remain in the standings and currently have a 230-point lead on 24th place after both had performance best performances at the Bryan Clay Invitational.

The Pac-12 leader this season is Hannah Rusnak of Washington. She scored 5,642 points at the Bryan Clay Invitational. Wenning is tied for second in the conference with UCLA's Christina Chenault at 5,585 points, while Wichhart-Donzo is fourth at 5,570 points. Mustin is 11th this season at 4,901. 14 women are entered in the competition this weekend.

On the men's side, the nation's top-two decathletes are not entered in the conference championships. Ayden Owens of USC leads the nation as a freshman with a score of 8,130. Stanford senior Harrison Williams is right behind him, but with both out Oregon freshman Max Vollmer is the clear favorite at the Pac-12 Championships. Vollmer is fifth in the nation at 7,840 points and has a 700-point lead on the next best entered athlete. Farmer is the sixth ranked in the event with a mark of 5,979, while Rhoads is one of four decathletes without a mark this season. There are 11 men entered in the event.

Colorado will also send throwers to Air Force this weekend at the Air Force Twilight Open. Tyler Sconce will compete in the shot put, discus and hammer throw, while Brock Knechtel and Caleb Penner will both throw the hammer and discus. Henry Carlson will also compete in the discus and javelin. For the women, Mariah Walker will toss the shot and discus, while Elisa Grandemange will compete in the hammer and javelin.
