Colorado set for 11 televised matches
BOULDER – University of Colorado head soccer coach Danny Sanchez announced a 20-match schedule for the 2019 season on Wednesday. 11 of CU's matches will be televised.
Â
The Buffaloes will face five teams that finished inside the top-7 in RPI and nine in the top-50. CU's 2019 opponents combined for a 240-142-33 record last season.
Â
The Buffs open the season hosting three NCAA Tournament teams in a string of their first six home matches. Colorado opens the season against Drake (Aug. 22) and Patriot League champion Boston University (Aug. 25). The team remains at home for the season's second weekend taking on Kent State (Aug. 29) and former Big 12 rival Texas (Sept. 1). The homestand closes with Austin Peay (Sept. 5) and another former conference foe in Baylor (Sept. 8).
"This is the toughest non-conference schedule that we have put together since we arrived at CU," Sanchez noted. "We were able to get three top-10 teams from last season, including two at home with Texas and Baylor. Boston University is another NCAA Tournament team last season that we get at home. Then we have two tough draws on the road against the defending national champions in Florida State and Denver."
CU's first road test will be a trip to Tallahassee, Fla., to battle the defending national champion Florida State Seminoles (Sept. 12).
Â
The non-conference schedule closes out with a pair of in-state matches. The Buffs will return to Prentup to take on Northern Colorado (Sept. 19), before heading to Denver (Sept. 21).
Â
The Pac-12 Conference season begins on the road. Colorado will visit Arizona on Thursday, Sept. 27. CU's first conference weekend follows with Oregon (Oct. 3) and Oregon State (Oct. 6).
Â
The remainder of the home schedule features Arizona State (Oct. 19), Stanford (Oct. 24) and California (Oct. 27).
"As always, the Pac-12 offers some of the most challenging competition in the nation," Sanchez added. "We have a good set of matches at home and we look forward to getting some big crowds out to support us against the Oregon schools, Arizona State, defending Pac-12 champions Stanford and Cal."
Â
The Buffs finished 13-4-3 last season, narrowly missing out on the NCAA Tournament. Colorado was ranked as high as No. 15 in the nation. The team went unbeaten through its first 16 games (13-0-3), the longest streak in program history.
Â
Colorado returns second-team All-American Taylor Kornieck for her senior season. She finished second on the team with a career-best 28 points, despite missing four matches to injury. Her 10 assists marked a CU single-season record. Kornieck jumped up the record lists at Colorado last season. She leads the Buffs with 1.20 points per game in her three seasons. Kornieck moved into second, averaging .45 goals per game and is fourth in points (72), fourth in goals (27) and third in assists (18).
Also returning for their senior campaigns are Jalen Tompkins, Tatum Barton, Kelsey Aaknes, Stephanie Zuniga and Camilla Shymka.
