Gold Tops Black 2-1 In Inaugural Black And Gold Scrimmage
August 21, 1999 | Soccer
BOULDER, Colo. - The University of Colorado women's soccer team completed their final day of preseason practices Saturday morning, with the Gold team beating the Black team 2-1 in the inaugural Colorado Soccer Black and Gold Game.
"I am encouraged by our whole preseason," said head coach Austin Daniels. "This was a nice way to finish our preseason. I thought the level of play was high even though they are a little tired from two and three-a-day practices. Our freshman have done really well. Dang (newly-hired assistant coach Dang Pibulvech) didn't know who were freshman and who were returning players at the start of our training. Every single one of them will be contributing to this program this year on some level."
The score was 0-0 at the end of the first half, but the Buffs had scoring opportunities all game long. Early in the first half, sophomore goalkeeper Danielle Bassett made an acrobatic save for the gold team on a Shawn Kenyon chip from the right side to keep the score knotted at 0-0. Junior forward Melissa Cartmell hit the post twice for the gold team, while redshirt freshman Meghan Swanzy nodded a header that was on its way to the net, but she was robbed by freshman goalkeeper Sara Erskine of the black team late in the half.
The teams switched players around in the second half, and it created additional scoring chances. Sophomore forward Susan Kiefer notched the first goal of the day for the black team off a pass from freshman midfielder Jessi Burgener, just beating Bassett to her right. The gold squad knotted the game at 1-1 when Cartmell finally hit net rather than the post, striking a ball from 25 yards out to just beat the outstretched hand of Erskine. Gold scored the third and
final goal of the day when Kenyon also made good from 18 yards in front of the net.
"I thought we played pretty well today," said Cartmell. "We've had a long eight days of preseason, and the things we worked on all week were showing up in our play today, so we're happy with that. We have our first game in less than a week, and this was a pretty good showing. Over half of us have been in this program for two or three years, and we're ready to win, and we think this is the year to make our mark."
Colorado opens the 1999 season on Friday, Aug. 27 at the University of Kansas at 3:00 p.m. MDT and Sunday Aug. 29 at the University of Missouri at 12:00 p.m. The first homestand of the 1999 season will kickoff on Friday, Sept. 3 against Alabama-Birmingham at 4:00 at Pleasant View Soccer Complex at the comer of Foothills Pkwy. and the Diagonal Highway. All home matches are free to the public.
