Eight Current and Former Buffs Compete at USA Championships

July 24, 2019 | Track and Field

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program has a total of eight current and former athletes competing this weekend in Des Moines, Iowa, in the 2019 Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships, beginning tomorrow and running through Sunday.

Current CU student-athlete Dani Jones is slated to compete next to former CU great Jenny (Barringer) Simpson in the women's 1,500, while volunteer assistant coach Riley Masters will run in the men's 5,000. Former Buffs also in competition include Emma Coburn in the women's steeplechase, Nick Harris in the men's 1,500, Connor Winter in the men's 5,000 and 10,000, Erin Clark in the women's 10,000 and Andrew Ghizzone in the men's decathlon. Simpson is also entered in the women's 5,000 at the end of the meet.

This will be Jones' third 1,500 race of the season after she most recently placed 12th at the Nike Prefontaine Classic in Stanford last month. The senior has just five races under her belt this season, including three 5,000-meter runs that accumulated to her fourth NCAA Championship.

The meet begins for the CU crew Thursday at 4:30 p.m. MT with the first round of the women's 1,500. Simpson has the second-fastest entry time at 3:59.83 behind Shelby Houlihan's 3:57.34. The race will also include the NCAA Champion Sinclaire Johnson from Oklahoma State that ran the second-fastest time in NCAA history behind Simpson's record. Jones is listed with the 15th-fastest entry time at 4:07.28, which she ran the season before at the Prefontaine Classic when she won the USA section of the meet.

Simpson is also slated to take on Houlihan in the 5,000. Houlihan has nearly a 30-second gap on the field in entry times at 14:34.45, while Simpson is qualified at 15:21.12.

Coburn will be another highlight for the Colorado crew, entered as the second-fastest time behind the American-record holder Courtney Frerichs. Coburn ran 9:04.90 at the Prefontaine Classic this season to finish second behind the world record holder, all despite suffering a minor fall on a barrier in the race. That is her second-fastest time, setting the stage for a strong competition between the Olympic Medalist, American-record holder and NCAA-record holder Colleen Quigley.

Before action begins on the track, Ghizzone will enter as one of the first CU decathletes to compete at as USA Championships in a long time. He takes to the track in the 100-meter dash at 1:45 p.m. MT on Thursday and will conclude action Friday at 5:46 p.m. in the 1,500.

The first final of the meet will come in the men and women's 10,000-meter runs Thursday evening. Clark will compete first at 7:50 p.m., followed by Winter in the men's race at 8:29.

Harris will compete in the 1,500 which begins at 3:30 p.m. MT Friday, with the final set for a busy Sunday for CU fans. The steeplechase final begins at 5:07 p.m. MT on Sunday, followed by the men's 5,000 with Masters and Winter entered at 5:23. Less than 20 minutes later Simpson will enter the women's 5,000 final, and the Buffaloes will hope to finish with Harris in the 1,500 finale at 6:33 p.m.

All of the action will be streamed live on NBC Sports Gold, while action Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. MT will be on NBCSN. Saturday will have live action on NBC from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. MT, with the final bit on NBC Sunday from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. MT. For a full schedule click here.
