Air Force Freezes Colorado's Win Streak
January 25, 2020 | Tennis
BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday afternoon in a rare and frigid January outdoor match against the Air Force Academy, 6-1.
Â
The Falcons were unbothered by the wind and cold from the start, dominating the doubles point with a pair of 6-2 victories in the No.1 and No.2 matches. The team then picked up a 2-0 lead in the No.3 match with Nadeen Lieberman defeating Maria Campos with a pair of 6-2 sets. Air Force clinched the victory after consecutive win in the No.5 and No.1 matches with Sydney Fitch defeating Megan Forster in a 6-2, 7-6 affair while TJ Fumagalli defeated Monica Malinen 6-4, 6-4 in the No.1 match.
Â
Colorado, who played the odd matches on one half of the CU South Campus Tennis Complex and evens on the other, had more favorable outcomes on the east side of the complex with Sophia Derivan leading the evens side with a 6-4, 6-4 win in the No.4 singles match against Kristin Kerrigan. Both Antonia Balzert and Tallulah Farrow were on the wrong end of first sets that went into a tiebreaker, but both rallied to win the second sets with ease (both sets were 6-1) and force a third. Farrow dropped her match with a 6-3 final set, while Balzert fell in her third set 6-4.
Â
The Buffaloes have a week to prep for a double-header next Saturday when they host Boise State at 10 a.m. and Northern Colorado, tentatively scheduled for 3 p.m.
