Buffs Blank Boise State And UNC In Doubleheader Sweep

February 01, 2020 | Tennis

BOULDER – Colorado's tennis team swept a rare home doubleheader on Saturday, shutting out Boise State 6-0 and Northern Colorado 4-0 at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center. The Buffs improved to 5-1 this season with the wins.

It was CU's first home doubleheader since 2014 when CU defeated Air Force and Colorado State, also on Feb. 1.

"Playing a doubleheader is never easy and I was happy with the energy we brought for both matches and the discipline," head coach Danielle Steinberg said. "Last year we had a tough match at Boise, a 4-3 loss, and this year winning here 6-0, it shows the improvement of the team and how much they want it. So that was nice to see. And just overall, it was good tennis from everyone. I'm very pleased."

Boise State Recap
The Buffs took control early with the doubles point as Sophia Derivan and Ky Ecton won 6-3 at No. 2 and Maria Campos and Tallulah Farrow clinched it with a 6-2 victory at No. 3. Derivan and Ecton pulled ahead after winning a break point with a 3-2 lead, and then took a commanding 5-2 lead by holding serve. Campos and Farrow jumped out to a 4-1 lead in their win.

In singles, it was Antonia Balzert putting the Buffs up 2-0 at No. 2, earning a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Joana Baptista. Baptista led 5-2 in the first set before Balzert stormed back with five straight games. She then jumped out to a 3-1 lead, winning an early break point in the second set.

Derivan stretched CU's lead to 3-0 with a 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 win at No. 3 over Holly Stewart. The two battled back-and-forth in the first set to force a tiebreaker. Derivan held a 5-3 lead in the tiebreaker, but Stewart fought back and held set point, serving at 7-6, before Derivan took the final three points for the 9-7 win. The second set was all Derivan early as she led 5-0, before closing it out 6-3 after a late fight from Stewart.

Monica Malinen clinched the match at No. 1 singles, winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 over Lilian Poling. Malinen trailed 4-3 and two breaks in the first set, but fought off two service games by Poling to come back. She seemed on track for a quick straight-set win with a 4-1 lead in the second, but Poling won the final five games to even the sets at 1-1. Neither player held serve in the first three games of the third set, but Malinen pulled away after trailing 3-2 to win five of the final six games.

Megan Forster cruised to a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles over Ana Conde Vendrell, and Maria Campos won 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-5) over Vanessa Timm at No. 5 singles. The final match was not played.

Northern Colorado Recap
Derivan and Ecton made quick work of the Bears at No. 2 doubles, blanking them 6-0, and once again, No. 3 doubles clinched the point with a 6-2 win from Campos and Farrow.

Derivan continued her dominance with a 6-0, 6-1 sweep of Milena Belianovich at No. 2 singles to give the Buffs their first singles point. Campos then pushed the lead to 3-0 at No. 3 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Raffa Mora, and Balzert clinched the match at No. 1, winning 6-4, 6-3 over Sandra Keta.

Postmatch Quotes

Danielle Steinberg, head coach
On the doubleheader
"Playing a doubleheader is never easy and I was happy with the energy we brought for both matches and the discipline. Last year we had a tough match at Boise, a 4-3 loss, and this year winning here 6-0, it shows the improvement of the team and how much they want it. So that was nice to see. And just overall, it was good tennis from everyone. I'm very pleased. Doubles looked at lot better [compared to last week]. We're still building, still learning, with a lot of freshmen in the lineup, so we've got to learn a lot of doubles. But as long as we get better every match we play, then I'm happy."

On the team's depth
"It's nice to be able to pull Monica from the second match and let her rest a little bit and know that Toni can handle it at No. 1, and know that everyone's moving up and still can handle it and we can count on our No. 6 and 7s. We're looking forward to being full strength, but I also know that we can count on our bottoms."

On the resilience of the singles players early in the Boise match
"I think we trust ourselves a little more and know that, especially the young players, and Monica too, if I'm down early, I'm going to stick with it and keep fighting. And in tennis, it really just takes one point to change momentum and it's something you always have to think of. And today was a perfect example of it. Monica's match was literally one point that made the whole difference and momentum completely shifted. If we have that mentality of just playing every point and sticking with it, then it's going to happen a lot more times [where we come back from early deficits]. You've got to just keep fighting, keep believing."
