Colorado Competes In Four Meets
February 12, 2020 | Track and Field
BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program will separate into four meets this weekend as event groups head to the Husky Invitational, Tyson Invitational, Don Kirby Invitational and David Hemery Valentine Invite.
Â
A majority of the distance squad and throws will head to Seattle for the Husky Invitational, while Dani Jones and Makena Morley will head to the University of Boston to compete in the David Hemery Valentine Invite while seeking out NCAA-qualifying times in the 5,000. The hurdles and sprinters will head to Fayetteville, Ark., to compete in the Tyson Invitational and the jumpers and combined event athletes will compete at the NCAA Championships site in Albuquerque at the Don Kirby Invitational.
Â
The smallest of those groups will be Jones and Morley, though their group expands by one as volunteer assistant coach Jenny Simpson is in the race. The three will be running virtually alone as Jones and Morley seek to run low 15:20s on the same track that has 16 of the 18 fastest 5,000 times on the women's descending order list and 17 of the top 24 times on the men's side (also 25 of the top-50 times were run on the men's side this season).
Â
On the other end of the country at the Husky Invite, Joe Klecker is joined by Alec Hornecker and Paxton Smith in the men's 5,000 along with Hunter Appleton and Austin Vancil. Elizabeth Constien and Kaitlyn Barthell will be on the women's 5,000 side, while Holly Bent will be in the women's 3,000.
Â
Jonathan Horton, Justice and Josh Ramos will run in the 800 while Eduardo Herrera will run alongside Noah Hibbard in the mile. The women's mile will also be a heavily-contested event with Rachel McArthur, Karina Mann, Annie Hill and Olivia Brooks all running.
Â
At the Tyson Invite, Tamia Badal, Eriana Henderson, Dani Johnson and Valerie Welch will all hurdle while Badal runs the 200, Abbey Glynn the 400 and Henderson and Welch will long jump. The men will focus on the 400 with Nathan Hoy, Garrett Nelson, Kendal Smith and Aaron McCoy in the open. Both squads will also look to run fast 4x400-meter relays.
Â
In the Don Kirby, only five athletes will compete with Davis Butte hurdling and pole vaulting, Jeremy Cody and Kylee Harr focusing on the high jump, Avery McMullen hurdling, high jumping and long jumping, and Cheyenne Cheshier triple jumping.
Action begins Thursday in New Mexico while the rest of the meets commence Friday and Saturday.
