Buffs Stay In Ninth After Second Round At Clover Cup
March 13, 2021 | Women's Golf
MESA, Ariz. – There was no change for the Buffaloes in the team standings at the Clover Cup as the women's golf team remained ninth after the second round of action on Saturday.
Â
Arizona has maintained its lead after the first day and is now 11-under through two rounds. The Wildcats shot a 4-under 284 and now sit at 565, which is six strokes better than the host, Arizona State (571), which is currently in second.
Â
Colorado recorded a 300 and is currently 22-over (298-300—598) with one round remaining at the 6,184-yard, par 72 Longbow Golf Club. The Buffs are only four strokes back from Colorado State (594), which dropped from sixth to eighth.
Â
"Somewhat of a Jekyll and Hyde round today," head coach Anne Kelly said. "Everyone struggled on the first nine (which was the back nine) and then played more like the team that I know on the front nine (our second nine). I think it's just a case of everyone trying way too hard and trying to be way too perfect. Hopefully tomorrow we can just relax and go out and play good golf like I know our team is capable of."
Â
For the second straight round, junior Alisha Lau led the team with a 2-over 74. She is currently tied for 25th (148). She had three birdies and 11 pars against three bogeys and one double-bogey. She played to a 2-over (38) on the back nine and shot an even 36 on the front nine.
Â
Sophomore Ellie Gower turned in a 4-over 76 scorecard following her second 18-holes of the tournament. She recorded three birdies and 10 pars to offset three bogeys and one double. Both of her doubles came on the back nine, within the first six holes, and after those, she made par on the next seven holes before sinking a birdie for a nice recovery. She is now tied for 36th (74-76—150).
Â
Senior Kirsty Hodgkins and sophomore Issy Simpson are tied for 40th as both are 7-over (151) through two rounds. Hodgkins shot a 4-over 76, making par on 12 holes. She also had one birdie but recorded five bogeys as well. Simpson fired a 2-over with four birdies and eight pars to go with six bogeys. She improved by three strokes today from her first round.
Â
Junior Malak Bouraeda had the toughest day on the back nine for CU since that's where five of her six bogeys came, as well as a quadruple-bogey on No. 15. She finished the back nine 9-over and was able to bounce back a bit on the front nine with four birdies. She also had one more bogey and made par on the other four holes to record 3-under on the front nine. She is currently tied for 50th (75-78—153).
Â
Clemson's Ivy Shepherd moved into the lead after firing a 68 in her second round. She is currently sitting at 7-under (137) and has a one-stroke advantage over Linn Grant (Arizona State), who has recorded back-to-back rounds of 69 (138).
Â
Playing as an individual, freshman Hailey Schalk played an even round on Saturday and when combined with her first round (75) she is tied for 20th. She started on the back nine like the rest of the team, recording five bogeys and two birdies in addition to making par twice. On the front nine, her putting was on point as she sank four birdies. She only shot one bogey and made par on the other four holes.
Â
The final round has the Buffs paired with Florida International and Colorado State. Like the previous two rounds, CU will tee off from the 10th hole, starting at 8 a.m. PDT.
