September 21, 2021 | Cross Country
NEW ORLEANS — After getting their first significant races of the season under their feet, the University of Colorado saw both of its cross country teams earn a No. 8 ranking in the latest edition of the USTFCCCA Division I Polls, which were released Tuesday.
Â
The CU women have been ranked eighth since the preseason poll, while the men made their first movement in the rankings. Â They jumped up four spots from 12th to eighth after finishing third at the Cowboy Invitational, September 18, in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The Buffalo men tied Oklahoma State's men with 62 points in the team race (the results were updated Tuesday morning on TFRRS.org) however, after the tiebreaker, finished third. Northern Arizona won the meet with 40 points.
Â
Eduardo Herrera finished second to lead the Buffaloes and was followed by four newcomers (all graduate transfers). Brendan Fraser (Notre Dame) took eighth, Stephen Jones (Mississippi State) placed 12th, Andrew Kent (Georgia Tech) finished 20th and Charlie Sweeney (Western Colorado) was 23rd. Â
Â
Colorado won the women's race, defeating OSU 30-33 (again the results were recently updated on TFRRS.org). Emily Covert placed third to lead the Buffs and was followed by Abby Nichols (fifth), India Johnson (sixth), Rachel McArthur (seventh) and Kaitlyn Barthell (ninth) for the team score.
Â
BYU and NC State are tied for first in the women's poll. BYU recorded seven of the 11 first-place votes while NC State received the remaining four. Both teams earned 323 points. New Mexico is third this week while Arkansas is fourth and Alabama is fifth.
Â
In the men's rankings, NAU stayed on top with 329 points while Notre Dame remained second. BYU and Stanford are tied for third and Oklahoma State rounded out the top five.
Â
There was no change in the regional rankings for either team. CU's men remained third behind NAU and BYU while the women stayed fourth behind BYU, New Mexico and Northern Arizona.
Â
Colorado's next race is the NCAA Pre-National Invitational, October 15, in Tallahassee, Fla., which is the site of the 2021 NCAA Championships.
