Colorado Wraps Up Day One Of Potts Invitational
January 12, 2024 | Track and Field
BOULDER -Â After returning from break, the University of Colorado track and field program wrapped up day one of the Potts Invitational here at the Indoor Practice Facility Friday evening, leaving just the running events for tomorrow.
"We saw a lot of good things and it was a good opener for us coming back from break," stated throwing coach Casey Malone. "You never know what you're going to see and usually we gotta shake a little bit of rust off, but in general, it looks like a lot of people were doing some good stuff over vacation. That's kind of the biggest thing I was hoping to find."
A total of five men's events and six women's events took place today as several Buffs reached the podium with top finishes. Kara Lucyk and Allie Routledge got things going for Colorado early into the meet as they both finished first in their respective jump events.
Lucyk dominated the long jump with her best mark being 5.74m on just her second attempt. The next best score was 5.43m from Northern Colorado's Jacklyn Trice.
Routledge had a tougher path to her first-place finish in the high jump as she found herself in a jumpoff with fellow teammate, Avery McMullen. Both women were unable to clear 1.77m on four attempts which resulted in a 1.75m jump.Â
Routledge managed a successful attempt while McMullen was unable to clear the bar to place second. Colorado's Riley Ward also came in third in the women's high jump.
"Allie [Routledge] and Avery [McMullen] doing a jumpoff for high jump was really exciting and fun to see," assistant coach Lindsey Malone said after the meet. "All of our vaulters did a great job and just across the board it was really fun to see people having fun and getting to be at our home meet."
Later in the day, Amanda Opp and Lauren Whyrick both saw third-place finishes in their throwing events. Opp reached a distance of 17.83m in the weight throw while Whyrick threw 13.78m in the shot put.
For the men, three Buffs placed second in three different events. Noah Bouchard finished second in the high jump, Aidan Christiansen finished second in the long jump and Matt Ward finished second in the weight throw with a distance of 20.18m.
The Potts Invitational will continue at the Indoor Practice Facility tomorrow with running events beginning at 11 a.m.
