Buffs Throwers to Highlight Upcoming Weekend

February 15, 2024 | Track and Field

BOULDER - Colorado track and field continues its season within the state this weekend as the Buffaloes are to compete in the Air Force Last Chance and the Mines Pre-Conference meets.

The Air Force Last Chance takes place at the Cadet Field House on Friday with field events beginning at noon and races starting at 2:30 p.m. The meet is scheduled to end shortly after 6 p.m.

After big performances on the track last week, the Buffs will compete in mainly field events this time around with a few exceptions. The only races that will showcase Buffs at Air Force are the 60-meter and the 200-meter. Luc Andrada, Sam Beckham and Dylan Edwards are set to race in the 60 while Garrett Nelson will be the lone Buff in the 200.

There will be a total of 11 Colorado throwers joining in on the action at the Cadet Field House. In the women's shot put, Lauren Whyrick and Meghan Whyrick look to lead the way after they finished first and second in the event last time at the Academy.

Amanda Opp, Isabella Braun and Obi Osafo-Mensah are representing the Buffs in the weight throw, the first event of the day. Back in December, Opp set a personal record in the weight throw at Air Force with a mark of 18.35 meters. She will also compete in the shot put.

The men's shot put will include Lucas Williams, Lars Atkinson, Ames Newman, Isaiah Bouchard and Gustavo Alfonso. All of them except for Alfonso will also be facing off in the weight throw with the addition of Matt Ward.

The Mines Pre-Conference will be on both Friday and Saturday at the Steinhauer Fieldhouse in Golden. Just seven Buffs are participating in the meet on Friday and just two on Saturday.

Avery McMullen, Kara Lucyk and Eva Bruce are to compete in the long jump at 4:30 p.m. on day one. Following the conclusion of the women's long jump, the men will compete in the same event. Colorado has four athletes set to jump with Nicholas Bianco, John Swabik, Aidan Christiansen and Drake Miller all ready for action. Troy Colleran will once again be competing unattached continuing his redshirt season.

On Saturday at Mines, Noah Bouchard and Riley Ward will jump in the men's and women's high jumps. This will mark the fifth time Bouchard participates in the high jump this season while it will be Ward's fourth time.

ACROSS THE POND
Colorado's Allie Routledge has had an impressive season thus far with her efforts in the high jump. On Sunday, she will be competing in the high jump at the Microplus UK Athletics Indoor Championships in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

Information on the championships can be found here.
