Colorado Reaches Podium at Air Force and Mines

COLORADO SPRINGS & GOLDEN – The Colorado Buffaloes track and field teams saw tons of top finishes here at the Air Force Last Chance and Mines Pre-Conference meets Friday.

"We were looking at this meet as kind of a reference to what we're pushing," coach Casey Malone said after day one. "This week we wanted to try to hit some new breakthroughs both technically and also just intensity-wise and competing and getting after it. So awesome good stuff."

The women's weight throw was the opening event on the day at the Cadet Field House and the Buffs fared very well. Amanda Opp finished first as she was the only thrower to surpass 18.00 meters. Isabella Braun placed second with a toss of 17.23 meters.

After competing in the weight throw at Air Force, Braun made it to Mines and showed off her skills in the weight throw there. She threw for a personal best 18.10 meters which was a first-place mark and puts her third all-time in the CU record book.

Colorado also owned the top-two spots in the women's shot put as the Whyrick sisters, Lauren and Meghan continued their impressive seasons.

Matt Ward dominated the men's weight throw at Air Force with a mark of 19.11 meters for a first-place finish. Isaiah Bouchard came in third while Lars Atkinson came in fourth.

"Matt was really close to having this very big next-level breakthrough that we've been working hard to try to find," Malone commented. "It broke down a little bit, but he set himself up well to find it next week."

In the only race that the Buffs competed in all day, Luc Andrada finished fifth in the 60-meter with a time of 6.76 seconds while Dylan Edwards finished 11th.

"Both of them are in a different spot and both of them need the same thing," coach Burke Bockman said. "It's just reps and races. Luc's been dealing with just some minor stuff so he hasn't raced as much as we want. 6.76 is okay, but it'll set him up for next weekend so he'll be ready to go next week in Seattle."

"Dylan's just not used to the block still so we're just getting him there. He's a little twitchy and the blocks cost him some time. I think it's a small PR for him, but he's way faster than some of his times show. So we're just excited to get him outdoors and get him more comfortable."

At the Steinhauer Fieldhouse in Golden, the men and the women competed in the long jump. Avery McMullen and Kara Lucyk went first and second in the event with marks of 6.26 meters and 5.87 meters. Eva Bruce just missed out on the top-three with a jump of 5.72 meters.

On the men's side, Aidan Christiansen, Nicholas Bianco, John Swabik and Drake Miller placed fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth in that order.
