No. 75 Colorado Falls to No. 42 Arizona
April 12, 2024 | Tennis
BOULDER – Despite the comeback attempt the No. 75 Colorado Buffaloes tennis team fell 4-3 to No. 42 Arizona here Friday afternoon at the CU South Tennis Complex.
Colorado (12-7, 1-6) came out flat early on in doubles leading to Arizona (15-10, 3-5) taking two different matches 6-0 to clinch the doubles point.
"The disappointing thing was our doubles. Credit to Arizona, they took it to us, our energy wasn't good in doubles," head coach Anthony Pham said on doubles. "With doubles, you have one set, no add, it goes quickly."
The Buffs saw struggles continue at a couple of spots in singles but also saw improvements across the board. Elys Ventura who had previously been on a six-match losing streak going back to CSU in late February saw her fortune turn with an emphatic first-set win. She closed in a tight second set to win her first Pac-12 match of the season and get the Buffs on the board.
Much like Ventura, Mila Stanojevic struggled last week losing both matches, but early on in singles she was coming out looking to change things and it worked taking the first set from Arizona. After dropping the second set it created a third and final set. There she finished it off and earned her 16th singles win of the season.
The last win of the day came from Betina Tokac at No. 4 singles who has gone through some struggles since returning from injury, but she finished getting through the rust and won in the third set to capture her tenth win of the season.
Despite the improved efforts, the Wildcats finished on top winning at No. 1, 5, and 6 singles to clinch the match.
"In tennis, you have to have a short-term memory," Pham said. "You have to look at some of the things we did well today and repeat that. Flush doubles, we've been playing really good doubles this year, but today was one of those days we didn't have good energy and it's tough to get good results. We have no choice; we have to turn it around. I keep saying this, it's the truth, my belief is very high in this team, I'm confident we can turn it around for Sunday."
