Rocky Mountain Showdown Tennis Edition Sunday in Boulder
January 24, 2025 | Tennis
BOULDER – In just the second week of the season, the Colorado Buffaloes tennis team is wrapping up its final home non-conference match against in-state rival Colorado State on Sunday at the Meadows Club.
After starting the season strong with two wins a week ago against Air Force and Denver, both quality in-state opponents, the final match against in-state teams will be against Colorado State.Â
"You always want to have success against the teams that are in your state and your region," head coach Anthony Pham said. "I think all three teams in the state of Colorado are very good programs, and we're excited to play Colorado State on Sunday."
The Buffs are looking to continue improving from match to match, as they did last week. Pham is confident the team will continue to grow. "We played two matches, going from Air Force to Denver and I thought we looked played better. We looked more comfortable. Our goal, match to match, we want to try to get better, and that's the goal this weekend. We're just looking at this match on Sunday, as an opportunity just to get better."
One of the biggest areas of improvement the team is looking for is to continue making strides in doubles play. After struggling as a whole team in the first match against Air Force, the team rebounded against Denver again continuing to be led by No. 1 duo Ema Bubalo and Anya Nelson who are currently ranked No. 21 in the country.Â
"I think last Sunday against Denver was another step forward, but we know there's still a lot of room for improvement there," Pham commented on doubles. "That will continue to be a point of emphasis for us because we know we can go into singles with the momentum, we're a tough out."
At the top of the lineup each week the Buffs send out Aya El Sayed, Mila Stanojevic, and Betina Tokac who are three players that have been through the program and are now a big reason for the success. Stanojevic and Tokac each went 2-0 last week both providing important wins. Against Air Force, Tokac won the first match and Stanojevic clinched the victory and against Denver, the two flipped with Stanojevic winning the first singles match and Tokac clinching the win for the Buffs.
"Aya, Mila, and Betina have been through a lot of battles. They understand the expectations. They have high standards for themselves, high standards for our program and they worked very hard over the years, to get us to where we are now. It's fun for us to see them reap the benefits of that."
Going back to 1969 the Buffs have figured out the Rams with a record of 41-1. The Rams will be on their second match of the season after opening the season on Friday against Montana. The match on Sunday will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the Meadows Club. After the match, the Buffs will complete an autograph session for fans attending. Â
