Kennedy Sanders Action vs. UTA

Buffs Conquer Mavs in Hawaii North Shore Showcase, 71-60

November 22, 2025 | Women's Basketball

Redshirt sophomore guard Kennedy Sanders had career-highs in points (19) and steals (5)

LAIE, Oahu – Colorado women's basketball (4-1, 0-0 Big 12) defeated UT Arlington (2-4, 0-0 WAC), 71-60, at the George Q. Cannon Activities Center in the first game of the Hawaii North Shore Showcase on Saturday, Nov. 22.

Despite shot clock malfunctions and an extended halftime, the Buffs had four players in double figures. The first half was back-and-forth, but CU stayed in the lead for the majority of it. Finding a good rhythm in the third quarter, the Black and Gold went on multiple runs to secure the win over the Lady Mavs.

"We still shot [throughout the chaos]," head coach JR Payne said. "We didn't make a single three, but we shot 40% from the floor. So even in the chaos, we took care of the ball okay. Fourteen turnovers but got to the free throw line. And in the second half, we just said we needed to be more aggressive to the paint, play off of two feet, take good contact, getting [ourselves] to the line."

CU had 40 points in the paint, with 19 points off fast breaks and 17 steals on the night.

KEY PLAYERS:
  • R-So. G Kennedy Sanders finished with a career-high in both points and steals with 19 and five, respectively. She also had one rebound, one assist and shot 100% from the free throw line.
  • Fr. F Logyn Greer had 15 points, six rebounds, two blocks, a steal and an assist.
  • PAYNE ON GREER: "[Greer] really is a special talent. Even just her court vision, handling pressure in the back court. She found [Masogayo] under the basket, wide open, when I didn't even see it. I was on the sideline, but she saw it and made a really beautiful play. Just a really well-rounded game."
  • Sr. F Jade Masogayo found the basket for 13 points, and had three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
  • R-Jr. G Desiree Wooten had 10 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
  • Sr. F Anaëlle Dutat grabbed nine rebounds and had two points.
  • R-Jr. G Zyanna Walker tallied eight points, four assists, five steals, two rebounds and a block.
  • Fr. G Erianna Gooden finished with one assist, one rebound and one steal.
  • Fr. C Jade Crook had two points and two rebounds.
  • For the Lady Mavs, Nya Threatt and Kali Haizlip each had 14 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Both teams remained scoreless for almost three minutes before the Lady Mavs put the first points on the board from beyond the arc. Walker made her way to the line to open scoring for the Buffs, making two free throws (3-2, UTA). Wooten went to work, making her way to the basket to put CU ahead (4-3, CU). Greer grabbed a board and scored before Walker had a defensive rebound and got it right back to her for another two points (8-4, CU). Arlington made another 3-pointer with 2:29 left to go in the first (8-7, CU). O'Connor followed up a UTA jumper with her own layup (10-9, CU). Sanders finished scoring in the first quarter with a layup after a Lady Mav 3-pointer, tying it all up at the break, 12-12.
  • Wooten forced a turnover and made a layup early in the second quarter, assisted by Masogayo (14-12, CU). Sanders and Masogayo both made it to the free throw line and kept the Buffs ahead (18-14, CU). The Buffs saw another layup from Wooten and a second-chance jumper by Walker thanks to a Dutat offensive rebound (22-16, CU). UTA made a shot from beyond the arc going into a media timeout, but Masogayo pulled up for a jumper to keep CU steady (24-19, CU). The Lady Mavs made back-to-back baskets to come within one (24-23, CU). Wooten scored again for the Buffs off her own steal, but a fifth foul put Arlington in the bonus, and they made two free throws (26-25, CU). Masogayo came in clutch in the last five seconds of the half, making a layup (assisted by Wooten) to lead by three (28-25, CU).
  • After a nearly 30-minute half-time due to technical issues with the clock, the second half was underway. The Mavs opened scoring in the third quarter, making a free throw, before Greer had a layup, assisted by Masogayo (30-26, CU). UTA made two layups to tie it up, as well as a 3-point jumper to take the lead (33-30, UTA). After making it back to the line for two good free-throws, Masogayo stole the ball from Arlington, passed it off to Wooten, who threaded the needle for Sanders to hit a fast break layup (34-33, CU). UTA tied it up with one of two free throws made, and Greer made one free throw before the media timeout (35-34, CU). Colorado went on a 6-0 run out of the timeout, with four free throws by Walker and Sanders, as well as a Walker layup (41-34, CU). Arlington made a jumper, which was followed up by 4-0 run off Greer free throws and a Sanders layup (45-36, CU). The Buffs made one more free throw, and UTA made four more to close out the quarter (46-40, CU).
  • UTA made a layup to start the quarter, and Wooten made it to the line to sink two free throws (48-43, CU). Two more Arlington free throws and a second-chance jumper put them within one (48-47, CU). Greer made back-to-back shots to start an 8-0 run, with help from a Masogayo basket and Sanders free throws (56-47, CU). Greer and Masogayo saw another two layups for the Buffs for their largest lead of the game (60-49, CU). Sanders grabbed another two points in the paint with 2:52 remaining in the fourth (62-51, CU). The Mavs managed an and-one to narrow the Buffs' lead (62-54, CU). Dutat made two more free throws, and Sanders had five points in six seconds (69-55). Crook finished off scoring and the game for Colorado with a layup, winning it, 71-60.
