Buffs And Cougars Set For Saturday: Five Things To Know

September 25, 2025 | Football

BOULDER — Colorado football is set for a 2024 Alamo Bowl rematch, hosting No. 25 BYU at Folsom Field on Saturday night (8:15 p.m.).

Colorado (2-2) returned to the win column with its 37-20 win over Wyoming last week. CU quarter Kaidon Salter put together one of the most dynamic performances in CU history, throwing for 304 yards and three touchdowns on 18-of-28 passing while adding 86 yards and a score on 11 carries.

The effort marked just the second game in Buffs' history in which a player reached 300 passing yards, three passing touchdowns, 80 rushing yards and a rushing TD. Steve Montez was 23-of-32 passing for 332 yards with three TDs and two interceptions while rushing for 135 yards and a score at Oregon in 2016.

It's also just the first such game across the entire FBS this season.

BYU (3-0), now in its third season in the Big 12, has yet to lose a non-conference game (9-0). This season, BYU has wins over Portland State, Stanford and East Carolina, entering the Top 25 in both the AP and the AFCA Coaches polls this week. The Cougars' defense has been strong through their first three games, ranking 23rd in the nation in passing yards allowed (161.0) and second in rushing defense (44.3). BYU leads the Big 12 and is second in FBS with 205.3 yards allowed per game.

Five Things to Know
  1. First Since '47 – The Buffs and Cougars met in last year's Alamo Bowl, the 1981 regular season and the 1988 Freedom Bowl. But this is the first league game between the two since a 9- CU win at Folsom Field on Oct. 18, 1947 – nearly 78 years ago (or 28,469 days).
  2. Balanced Attack – CU rushed 31 times for 193 yards and two scores against Wyoming, matching the highest output of the Coach Prime era (USC in 2023).
  3. Sincerely, Your Deep Threat –  Sincere Brown has emerged as a true home-run hitter. He hauled in a 68-yard touchdown from Kaidon Salter last week, adding to a 71-yard score from Ryan Staub earlier this season. It's believed to be just the third time in CU history a receiver has caught 65-plus yard passes from two different QBs in the same season, joining Rae Carruth in 1995 (Koy Detmer and John Hessler) and Paul Richardson in 2013 (Connor Wood and Sefo Liufau).
  4. Q for 100 – Quentin Gibson has topped 100 kickoff return yards in back-to-back games, the first Buff to do so since Marques Mosley in 2012. It's just the eighth such streak in CU history, and Gibson is now the 15th Buff with multiple 100-yard return games in a season.
  5. 30 Prime – No, 30 isn't a prime number—but it is for CU. The Buffs are 10-0 the last two seasons when scoring 30-plus points, and just 1-6 when falling short of the mark.

Mark Jones, Roddy Jones and Quint Kessenich will have the call on ESPN.

Voice of the Buffs Mark Johnson and former head coach Gary Barnett will have pregame coverage starting at 5:15 p.m. MT on the Colorado Radio Network, locally on 850 KOA (AM) and 94.1 FM.
