Colorado Continues Building Identity Up Front In Spring Practice
April 01, 2026 | Football
BOULDER — The Colorado Buffaloes wrapped up another spring practice session with signs of progress on both sides of the ball, highlighted by explosive offensive plays and a competitive defensive finish.
The offense found its rhythm for much of the day, led by a breakout moment from running back DeKalon Taylor, who burst through the middle for a 50-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Julian Lewis also showcased his development, connecting on multiple deep touchdown passes to newcomer Danny Scudero.
The defense responded late, closing practice with back-to-back stops in two-minute drill situations to end the session on a high note.
Up front, Colorado's offensive line continues to be a focal point this spring, as position coach Gunnar White emphasized chemistry, physicality and growth within a retooled unit.
"They're bonding together right now," White said. "It's hard for an offensive line to play together if you don't have a relationship. That part has been really good to see."
With several new faces added through the transfer portal, White said building cohesion both on and off the field has been critical.
"A lot of it comes from time," White said. "You've got to find ways to build relationships outside the building. That trust carries over when you get on the
field."
The Buffs are placing a clear emphasis on improving the run game heading into the fall, something White called "vital" to the offense's success.
"If you don't run the football, defenses can just pin their ears back," he said. "We want to move the line of scrimmage and go vertical."
That mentality has been embraced by the offensive line room, particularly by veteran Yahyah Attia, who is stepping into a leadership role entering his third season.
"The biggest thing is responsibility," Attia said. "People rely on me now. If new guys come in, I've got to have answers for them. This is my family."
Attia added that the group's identity is rooted in physicality and energy.
"We've got some D-linemen on the O-line," he said. "We don't play about the job."
Assistant offensive line coach Andre Gurode echoed that mindset, emphasizing competition and toughness across the unit.
"We don't give you anything," Gurode said. "You have to earn it and take it. I want to see guys fight and execute no matter the situation."
The addition of experienced players, including center Demetrius Hunter, has helped stabilize the group as it continues to develop chemistry.
"It's vital to have a veteran center," Gurode said. "He controls everything on offense."
Offensive line coach George Hegamin pointed to leadership and mental toughness as key priorities in roster construction this offseason.
"When pressure hits, our guys don't crumble," Hegamin said. "They lean forward."
