Wetmore on Hughes: She is the indoor school record holder for 5,000 meters, and the outdoor school record holder 10,000 meters. She will compete in those events again, she certainly hopes to lower her personal bests in those events, score at a conference level, and qualify and score at the NCAA's in Baton Rouge.

2001 Track & Field: As if being on the 2000 National Championship Cross Country team wasn't enough for this All-American, Hughes' running ability and winning attitude transferred over to the track team to help her win the 5,000 meter Big 12 (16:23:65) and NCAA Indoor Championship (16:08:61) just months later. She also took third at the Big 12 Indoor Championships in the 3,000 meter run (9:32:60). Hughes went back to NCAA National Championships in the outdoor season and did not fair as well as the indoor championship, but still performed excellent. She came in 21st in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 16:38:42, after just a month earlier she set her personal best at 16:02:79. She garnered All-American honors after coming in eighth place in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 35:05:00. Hughes? set a personal best, and broke the CU record in the 10,000 meter run at the Mt. SAC Relays in 33:25:14.

2000 Track & Field: Advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 3,000 meters, finishing 19th in a time of 10:06.79 in the prelims. Ran a personal best time of 9:25.89 to qualify for the NCAA meet, and also ran a PR 4:26.52 at the Big 12 outdoor championships. Indoors, Hughes provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet at 3,000 meters with her time f 9:32.14, but did not advance to the meet. She took 7th at the Big 12 indoor meet in the same event, running a time of 9:39.34.

1999 Track & Field: Ran a variety of events indoors, ranging from the 800 meters to the mile run. Took 9th at the Big 12 Championships with her time of 5:02.45 in the mile run. During the outdoor season, Hughes ran more distance-oriented events, including a personal best 17:32.24 in the 5,000 meters at the Big 12 meet, good for 10th. She would also run a personal best in the 3,000 meters, running 9:41.65 at the Cardinal Qualifier in May.

High School: Hughes, a state qualifier all four years at The Woodlands, was the team's Most Valuable Player her sophomore through senior seasons and named to the Houston All-City Team as a junior. Her national meet experience includes a fifth place finish at the 1996 FootLocker regional and advancing to the national championships where she finished 27th in San Diego, Calif. As a senior she was the Houston Chronicle Athlete of the Week. She graduates The Woodlands with school and personal records in the 1,500-m (4:42), 1,600-m (4:56), 3,000-m (10:02) and 3,200-m (10:38) distances and the district record in the 1,600-m (5:00). A National Honor Society member her junior and senior years, Hughes graduated magna cum laude.

Personal: Born April 14, 1980 in Fort Worth, Texas, she is the daughter of Scott and Cathy Hughes of The Woodlands, Texas. Hughes is enrolled in the college of Arts & Sciences and spent her first four semesters on the Dean's List and sports a 3.762 grade point average.
