2003 (I) 10,000-Meter, 5th (31:15.64)

2004 (O) 10,000-Meter, 7th (31:23.51)

2005 Outlook: Severy has been a varsity scorer in the past at 10,000-meter, and is coming off his best fall cross country season ever. The coaches have high expectations in his final track and field campaign.

2004: Severy did not compete during the indoor season due to an Achilles injury. Outdoors he was one of the team’s top 10K runners and competed in the 1,500 and 5,000-meter runs. He scored at the Big 12 Championships in the 10K when he finished seventh in 31:23.51.

2003: Severy competed in the 1,500, 3,000, 5,000 and 10,000-meter races during his junior season. His indoor 3,000 time of 8:29.12 earned 12th place at the Big 12 Championships, while his 14:37.63 in the indoor 5,000 was good for a seventh place finish at Big 12s. During the outdoor campaign, Severy claimed eighth at Big 12s in the 5,000 (14:43.07) and fifth in the 10,000 (31:15.64).

2002: He redshirt both seasons while studying abroad in Seville, Spain.

2001: As a true freshman Severy ran just one race indoors, a win in the 3,000 at the Colorado Invitational and three outdoor races, an 11th place 1,500-m effort at Stanford and matched that finish two weeks later in the Big 12 Championship 5k race. He doubled and ran the 10k at the conference championships that season, just missing scoring by one position, finishing ninth.

Cross Country: Severy is the only runner in the history of the men’s team to be part of two NCAA Championship team titles, doing so as a freshman and senior, earning All-American honors in the latter with a career best 21st place finish in race, his fourth. He has scored in all but five of 19 career races and as a senior also added all-Big 12 and all-NCAA Mountain Region honors to his resume.

High School: Tabbed one of the best and most consistent distance runners in state history by the Denver Post, Severy was a four-year performer for head coach Mark Barber who mentored the Skiers to district championships from 1996-99 during Severy’s freshman through senior seasons. As a freshman, he was an all-district performer in cross-country and track, and earned all-state recognition in both sports as a sophomore. He three-peated his all-state cross-country honors as a junior and added all-state in the mile and two-mile on the track. As a senior he was the two-mile state champion, setting the Aspen prep record (9:12) at the meet in Pueblo, Colo. He graduated holding Aspen’s mile (4:23) and two-mile (9:12) records, run at the 2000 State Championships in Pueblo and at the 2000 Great Southwest Invitational in Phoenix. He was featured as one of Sports Illustrated’s Faces In The Crowd in the Aug. 11, 2000 issue.

Academics: Severy carries a 3.756 grade point average in philosophy, including a perfect 4.000 President’s List his first semester and six Dean’s List semesters. He has been named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll nine times and the Academic All-Big 12 team twice. He studied abroad in Seville, Spain during the spring ?02 semester.

Personal: Jonathan Richard Severy was born February 16, 1982 in Aspen. He is the son of Betty (who was a 2002 Winter Olympics torch bearer in Aspen) and the late Charles Severy. He is the younger brother of the late Christopher Severy, a 1996 All-American at CU, and Robin (a 2001 CU grad and former member of the cross country team); he is the older brother of Elizabeth, the hockey player of the family, who is a sophomore at CU, 16-year-old Christine who is following the family tradition of running and a 10-year-old brother, Patrick. He has been known to spend summers as a baseball, t-ball and track coach in Aspen. An avid outdoorsman, he spent the summer of 1999 in Bolivia mountain/rock climbing and kayaking.
