High School: A two-time letterwinner in track at Monte Vista High School, Owen graduated with school records in the 4x800-meter (9:57), 800-meter (2:20.19), 1,600-meter (5:16) and 3,200-meter (12:01). As a junior, the Pirates were the 2002 league and regional champions in the 4x800-m relay and her senior year they finished seventh at the state cross country championships. Individually, she was the 800-m regional champion and third in the 800 and 1,600-m, as well as sixth in the 3,200-meter. She was named All-South Central in the 4x800-m as a junior and All-Valley in cross and all-conference in the 800-m as a senior.
Personal: Kate Owen was born Dec. 17, 1984 to parents Wayne and Debbie Owen in Ruidoso, N.M. She has one brother, Tommy (13) and an uncle, Jon, who ran track at Wake Forest and professionally. She is an open-option major at Colorado, but is interested in psychology/kinesiology and would like to become a teacher, coach or sports psychologist after completion of her undergraduate work. Owen entertained interest from Texas Tech, Wyoming, Western State and Oklahoma Christian before choosing Colorado.
