Wetmore on Slattery: Steve Slattery is the school record holder in the steeplechase. He finished third in the NCAA steeple last spring. He?s also the indoor mile record holder here at CU, and will see duty at middle distances and the steeplechase. I?m sure his goal is to capture the NCAA steeplechase final, and lower his own school record again.

2001 Track & Field: With already three All-American titles on his resume in the middle of his junior year, Slattery continued his dominance in 2001 taking third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, earning him his fourth All-American honor, after already taking home a Big 12 Championship two weeks earlier. His time of 8:42.91 was the second-fastest Slattery ran during the outdoor season, following an 8:37.69 performance at the Mt. SAC Relays in April. NCAA champion Daniel Lincoln of Arkansas ran a time of 8:42.31, just 0.6 seconds faster than Slattery, while the runner-up, Jeremy Tolman of Weber State took second in 8:42.85, just 0.06 seconds ahead of Slattery. February 2, 2001 was a great day for Slattery during the indoor season. He claimed two individual titles at the Nebraska Quadrangular: one in the 1,000 meter run (2:25:13) (FHR) while the other came in the mile run?one of the races Slattery holds an All-American title in?when he crossed the finish line in 4:01:94, setting a new CU record and provisionally qualifying him for the NCAA Indoor Championships. He also was provisionally qualified for the 1,500 meters following taking second in 3:42:36 at the Cardinal Qualifier.

2000 Track & Field: Earned all-American honors in the steeplechase outdoors at the NCAA meet with his seventh place finish (8:43.82), and also qualified for the meet in the 1,500 meters with his provisional mark of 3:43.82. Took third in the Big 12 Championships in the steeple after hitting the water barrier, still earning an automatic qualifying mark of 8:42.75.

1999 Track & Field: Set a personal best and NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 5,000 meters (14:18.19) at the Cannon IV Classic in February. He continued to improve his standings in the mile run during his indoor campaign, as he had the top preliminary time at the Big 12 meet, running a 4:13.08, taking fourth overall (4:15.06) in the final. He also added a second place finish in the 3,000 meters run (8:43.73) at the Colorado Invitational. He carried over his success to the outdoor season where he set another personal best along with a NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 8:41.21 in the Steeplechase at the Penn Relays. He also added a second place finish (9:05.01) in this event at the Willie Williams Classic. He also went on to set another personal best in the 1,500 meters (3:45.04) at the Cardinal Qualifier.

High School: Slattery brings credentials to Boulder that total four All-American titles, six all-state honors, a 12-time all-County athlete, Madison Square Garden Athlete of the Week, and N.J. Nets Athlete of the Month. In cross country he was a two-time state champion and two-time FootLocker All-American. In the 2- mile during the indoor track season he finished fourth at the Indoor National Scholastic Meet in a personal record 9:12. Outdoors in the mile he ran a 4:10 to finish second in the Golden West Meet and in the 2,000 meters steeplechase he was the National Scholastic champion. When he graduated from Mt. Olive he held prep records in the mile (4:10), 2 mile (9:12), New Jersey State Freshman Mile, State Sophomore 3,000 meters outdoor (8:35), N.J. Junior 2 Mile Indoor, State 3,000 meters Indoor and National Scholastic 2,000 meters steeplechase Meet record (5:49), which was the fourth fastest time ever for a prep. His national meet experience includes 1996 & ?97 FootLocker National Meet (9th/4th), 1998 Golden West Mile (2nd), 1997, & ?98 Indoor National Scholastic, 1997 & ?98 Outdoor National Scholastic Championships.

Personal: Slattery was born August 14, 1980, the son of Steve and Geraldine Slattery of Flanders, N.J. He is a black belt in Karate, and chose CU over Stanford, Arkansas, N.C. State, North Carolina, Notre Dame and Michigan.
