Jovan Parlic is entering his second season as an assistant coach for CU's women's tennis team. He brings three years of coaching at a high level and will be a key piece to Steinberg building the Buffs into a nationally-prominent program.
During the first season, Parlic helped lead the Buffs to a highlight year with a school record three Pac-12 wins, including the first-ever sweep of a Pac-12 opponent.
The team finished with a 10-14 overall record with a 3-7 conference record, including an upset of No.28 Washignton State in a 4-3 win at home. He helped lead freshman Sara Nayar to a 101st-rank finish in the nation that included three top-40 upsets in the nation. In doubles, Annabelle Andrinopoulos and Moncia Malinen upset the No.2-ranked team in the nation and No.15 throughout the season, ending as the 43rd-ranked doubles team in the nation on the verge of a NCAA Tournament berth.
The 2018-19 season is just the third time in school history that the team, an individual and a doubles pair concluded the season ranked overall.
“I am thrilled to have Jovan on our staff,” head coach Danielle Steinberg said. “Jovan is already an established player development coach, which will also help us tremendously on the recruiting side of things. He is hard-working, hungry, and passionate about tennis and coaching; those are the qualities I look for in our staff as well as our recruits. His experience as an international student-athlete, as well as coaching at IMG and Arkansas, makes him one of the best up-and-coming coaches in the country, and I have no doubt he will make a positive impact on Colorado tennis right away.”
Parlic, despite being a 2015 graduate of Arkansas, already has a wealth of coaching experience at a high level. During the 2015-16 season, he served as a student assistant with the Arkansas men’s team. The Razorbacks began the season unranked and climbed up to No. 12 in the final ranking of the season. He coached Nos. 1 and 2 singles and the No. 1 doubles pair, leading all three to a top-20 national ranking.
He spent his second year of coaching at the IMG Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Bradenton, Fla., working with a number of highly-ranked youth, college and professional tennis athletes. He coached the No. 1-ranked girls and boys ITF players, and a two-time NCAA women’s national champion, among several other accomplished tennis players.
Parlic moved back to Arkansas for the 2017-18 season and was an assistant for the women’s team. He helped guide the Razorbacks to the SEC Tournament semifinals, becoming the first team in conference history to reach the semifinals as a No. 11 seed. The team also upset three top-20 teams during the season, including No. 7-ranked South Carolina. While he was serving as interim head coach, the Razorbacks beat No. 18 Kansas.
“I am excited and honored for this opportunity to advance my tennis career at the University of Colorado,” Parlic said. “I see immense potential for growth in the women’s program and am ecstatic to be part of the team as we embark on this journey together. Coach Danielle is extremely organized, driven, and dedicated to her job and we are going to make a great coaching pair. Go Buffs!”
A native of Nis, Serbia, Parlic was a four-year letterwinner and two-year team captain. He was a four-time SEC Academic Honor Roll student-athlete and earned his bachelor’s degree in pre-professional kinesiology in 2015.
