DECIMATED COLORADO WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM FALLS TO WYOMING

October 05, 1997 | Soccer

LARAMIE, Wyo. -The University of Colorado dropped a 2-1 decision to Wyoming here Sunday, as the injury-plagued Buffaloes were unable to rally after losing two starters and another major contributor to injury during the course of the game.

Keeper Sloane Cox (bruised hip), defender Liz Swain (concussion) and midfielder Brita Zoellner (sprained ankle) were all knocked from the game, and an already thin Colorado squad simply didn't have the raw numbers to mount a comeback attempt after the Cowgirls took the 2-1 lead in the game's 79th minute.

After a scoreless first half, Wyoming's Katrina Morton opened the scoring in the contest with a goal on keeper Nina Bjornstad, who was subbing for the fallen Cox, in the game's 48th minute, burying a loose ball in the left corner of the Buffalo net.

Colorado knotted the game at one apiece just four minutes later when sophomore forward Shawn Kenyon took an assist from freshman Kelly Kaitanjian to beat Wyoming keeper Nan Sommer, but the second Wyoming goal in the game's 79th minute once again gave the Cowgirls the lead.

Colorado, which already had four players injured and unavailable for the game before losing the additional three during the game, couldn't answer, and drops to 3-9 on the season.

The Buffaloes will now take the next 12 days off for some much-needed rest before challenging Big 12 rival Baylor on Oct. 17.
