COLORADO WOMEN'S SOCCER SNAPS SEVEN-GAME SKID, BEATS KANSAS 1-0
October 30, 1998 | Soccer
BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's soccer team (5-11-3, 2-5-2) ended their seven-game winless streak and six-game scoreless streak when they beat Kansas (5-12-1, 1-8-1) here Friday night 1-0. Sophomore midfielder/forward Melissa Cartmell scored her team-high fifth goal of the season, and senior goalkeeper Sloane Cox earned her fifth shutout of the season.
"Obviously, it is nice to get a win," said coach Austin Daniels. "We created so many chances and we finally got one in the net. Melissa did a good job and created a number of chances, but everyone did a good job of providing support. Our forwards got great support from the midfield, and the defenders did a good job of supporting the midfield. We were able to move the ball around a lot."
The goal came in the 75th minute, when reserve midfielder Kyley Ellenberger crossed a ball in front of the Kansas goal. Cartmell ran in front, and tucked it away in the bottom left comer of the net to give the Buffs the win. The shot was Cartmell's eighth of the game, as she ended up with a total of nine on the day, a CU record.
"I told myself, 'If I don't score a goal today, I'm going to be really upset,' because I got the opportunity to play forward." said Cartmell. "I had so much adrenaline, because for three weeks we have not been able to score a goal, and I just wanted to put one in the net."
The Buffs had not scored a goal since Oct. 9 at Iowa State, when junior Shawn Kenyon notched one in the first half. CU had gone 14 halves and an overtime without scoring, the longest scoring drought in Buff soccer history. This was also the longest winless streak in Colorado soccer history.
The game marked Cox's record fifth shutout of the 1998 season, and came in a match where she was relatively untested. The Jayhawks managed only 13 shots on the Buffs today, compared to 25 for CU.
Colorado returns to Pleasant View for their final contest of the season against the University of Missouri (8-8-1, 4-5-0) this Sunday, Nov. 1 at 1 :00 p.m. "It is important to us to finish this season on a high note," remarked Cartmell. "Because despite everything and being really disappointed with the season, we still show a lot of heart." CU can play spoiler this weekend, as a Buff win eliminates the Tigers from the Big 12 tournament.
Immediately prior to the kickoff, the Buffs will honor their 1998 senior class. Cox, defender Teri Fildey, and defender Lauren Kulmann, who was lost to a knee injury earlier this year. The first 1,000 fans to the match will receive team posters, which the Buffs will autograph following the game.
