HOGAN WINS WOMEN'S SLALOM AT UTAH

January 11, 2004 | Skiing

PARK CITY, Utah --Colorado sophomore Erika Hogan's domination in the first run of Sunday's slalom eventually paced her to her first collegiate win, taking the event in the opening day of the Utah Invitational, the season opener on the west schedule.

Hogan took the first run convincingly in the only sub-45 second run of the morning (44.59), which made up for her second run of 46:01, to finish in a two-run time of 1:30.60, 2.20 ahead of Denver's Pia Rivelsrud (1:30.95) and Boise State's Spela Bertoncelj (1:30.95).

It was Colorado's strongest finish of the day, as she and freshman teammate Kristin Taylor (10th, 1:33.22) were the Buffs' lone top-10 finishers between the men's and women's teams, while junior Tahir Bisic paced the CU men with a 19th place finish in a two-run effort of 1:57.77 in the GS.

With just three top-20 finishes, the Buffs (112.5 points) find themselves 29.5 points behind meet leader Denver (142), New Mexico (138) and host Utah (123.5)"not the first impression that the preseason second-ranked Buffs were hoping to give.

In an underclassman dominant day, freshman Julie Czesnowski (1:36.83) finished 26th and sophomore Sarah Fischer (1:39.54), 35th.  Semester newcomer Cody Jenick (1:57.77) finished 24th in his first collegiate race, followed by junior Fritz Ernemann (1:59.91) and senior Mike Read (2:07.45) who finished 33rd and 52nd, respectively.

The slalom portion of the meet will be decided here Monday, while the Nordic portion of the Invitational will be Jan. 23 (classical) and 24 (freestyle).
