SKIERS REMAIN FOURTH IN UTAH

January 23, 2004 | Skiing

SOLDIER HOLLOW, Utah ? The University of Colorado ski team couldn't make up any ground here Friday as the Utah Invitational resumed with the cross country portion of the meet, with the Buffaloes remaining entrenched in fourth place.

The alpine events were head in conjunction with the Utah State Games early last week, ending with New Mexico holding a 12-point lead over Denver.  After Friday's cross country classical races, UNM extended its lead over DU by a single point, as the Lobos have 429 points through six events to 416 by the Pioneers; host Utah made up just two points on the leaders and sit in third with a 412 total, while the Buffaloes are in fourth with 332.5, just under 80 points behind Utah but 54 ahead of fifth-place Alaska-Anchorage.

CU is a but hampered in this meet, as its top male nordic skier, junior Tor Erik Schjellerud, is in his native Norway competing in the Norwegian National Championships, while sophomore Erling Christiansen is competing here but is suffering from flu-like symptoms.  Colorado had won the nordic competition at last week's Nevada Invitational.

In the women's 5k classical event, New Mexico's Martina Stursova won in a 15:53.8 time, edging teammate Lena Jensen by 1.1 seconds.  CU junior Jana Rehemaa claimed fourth in 16:08.3, with senior Claire Critchley finishing 13th in 16:57.2.

In the men's 10K version, Utah's Henning Dybendal won his second straight race in routing the field with a 27:43.4 clocking; DU's Erlend Hoff was a distant second in 28:29.7.  Colorado was led by sophomore Henrik Hoye, who finished sixth in 29:04.1; Christiansen skied well considering he was under the weather, as he was 13th in 29:40.6.

The meet concludes Saturday with the freestyle events; the men's 15-kilometer event starts at 10 a.m., while the women's 10K is set for 11 a.m.  The full team resumes action at the New Mexico Invitational on February 6-7.

DAMROW TO HEAD TO WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

After the conclusion of the Utah meet, CU freshman Tim Damrow is headed to next month's World Junior Championships in Stryn, Norway (Feb. 3-8), as he is one of 12 athletes who has been named to the U.S. Junior team.  The freshman from Roseville, Minn., won the 30k classic at last week's U.S. Nationals in a time of 1:27:07, defying rain, hail and snow over the 7.5-kilometer loop on the Chisholm Ski Club course in Rumsford, Maine.  He also finished fifth two days later in the 10k freestyle race.  CU sophomore Nick Sterling finished eighth in the 30K event, while senior Josh Smullin was 21st in the men's overall skate sprint.
