Skiers Third In Alaska Invite

January 13, 2005 | Skiing

JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. - The University of Colorado ski team is in third place after the first two events of the Alaska Invitational, as the first of three days of competition was held here Thursday amid very snowy conditions.

Utah owns a slight lead with 133 points, followed closely by Denver (130), Colorado (124) and defending NCAA champion New Mexico (122.5).  Host Alaska is the only other team in triple figures, standing fifth with 107.5.

Colorado had a balanced day, placing four skiers combined in the top 11 of the two races, something only Utah was also able to accomplish.  The end result was just the 10.5-point separation atop the team standings, and the GS races were reflective of that as well.  The top 12 in the men's race were separated by less than two seconds, while the top five women were two seconds apart.

CU's best finish of the day was provided by fab freshman Rachel Roosevelt, as she posted a two-run time of 1:46.80 on the Snow King Resort giant slalom course.  Sophomore Kristin Taylor supported Roosevelt's effort and bolstered CU's team score with an eighth place showing in 1:47.72.  Freshman Jannicke Brusletto placed 14th in 1:49.03, but two of Colorado's top performers, junior Erika Hogan (23rd, 1:51.23) and frosh Lucie Zikova (DNF, second run), struggled in the event.  Denver's Florence Roujas won in a 1:45.36 time, four-tenths of a second ahead of teammate Karine Falck Pedersen, who edged Roosevelt by four-hundredths of a second.

Roosevelt, Hogan, Taylor and Zikova will depart following the meet here to participate in the World University Games next week in Innsbruck, Austria.

The Buff men were paced by a pair of freshman Thursday, as Joel Adams finished 10th in a two-run time of 1:41.01 and Miles Cooke 11th in 1:41.13.  Senior Fritz Ernemann took 17th in 1:41.80, though his 50.84 time for his second run was the 11th fastest recorded.  Sophomore Brad Hogan did not finish his second run, as he was one of the favorites going in, and senior Tahir Bisic, ninth after the morning run, had a little trouble with a couple of gates in the afternoon and eventually finished 32nd in 1:45.33.  Alaska's 1. Andreas Neuhause won in a 1:39.32 time, almost four-tenths of a second ahead of second place finisher Lars Loeseth Sunde on New Mexico.

The slalom races will take place on Friday, as will the first nordic events, the men's and women's freestyle races.  The cross country classical races on Saturday will conclude the competition.
