Women's Golf 15th After First Round at NMSU

LAS CRUCES, N.M ? The University of Colorado women's golf team struggled through their early round this morning but battled back four spots to 15th place after two rounds (319-305-624) here at the Price's Intercollegiate Tournament, hosted by New Mexico State University.

“We had perfect weather today, the course is just tough,” said CU head coach Anne Kelly. “It's their university golf course, and it's really nice. It's long, pretty long and narrow. It's a good test of golf. We played a lot better this afternoon but it was really tough.”

Senior Maria Persson-Gulda was the only Buffalo under 80 in the first round, carding a two over par 74. She sat in 12th place after the first round of play. Lindsay Caljouw was second for CU with an 81, followed by Hannah Hoch's 82. Fourth player Jessie Malcolm shot 82 with Lindsay Senger shooting 85.

“Maria hit the ball pretty well, she just had putting problems,” said Kelly. “She was disappointed this afternoon because she missed a lot of make able putts.

“To be honest, Hannah is not hitting the ball her best, but she played really tough this afternoon. Her putter finally got to working a little bit but she just had to fight really hard. That shows what kind of player she is to score even when she's not hitting the ball as well as she is capable of.”

Coach Kelly's Buffs rallied for the afternoon round and gave No. 1 player Persson-Gulda some help.

Caljouw and Hoch both bounced back with a two-over 74, while Persson-Gulda was four-over with a 76. Malcolm improved one stroke to an 81, while Senger dropped three strokes off her score to card an 82.

The Buffs are currently sitting in 15th place out of 20 teams after shooting a 305 in their second round. It's a 14 stroke improvement from the first round to the second round, and Kelly hopes for more of the same improvement on Tuesday.

“This is a really talented team, but we just haven't put it together this fall,” said Kelly. “Basically even when we were third at DU, it was mediocre. Once we can get on a roll, we'll be fine. We're just struggling a little bit right now.”

The Buffs will have a chance to maybe get that ball rolling in tomorrow's third round with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
