Torres Torres Claims Flight 3 Title at USAFA Invite

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. ? University of Colorado sophomore Gleisy Torres Torres claimed first place honors in her singles flight with a pair of victories on day three of the six-team USAFA Invitational, Sunday afternoon. Initially the invitational was supposed to be outdoors, however was moved inside to the due to the inclement weather.
Torres Torres, who received a first round bye, won her lone match on Saturday, then claimed her fifth and sixth singles victories of the fall season with a pair of wins on Sunday. She defeated Christine Abayan of Air Force, 8-6 and followed with a tough three-set winner over Denver's Kyla Iwinski, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3. Torres Torres has now won six straight matches in her last seven outings.
Elsewhere in singles play, Jessica Vanderdys lost her semifinal match in the Flight I winners bracket, however, rebounded in her consolation third place match with a victory over Emily Kirchem of Colorado State, 6-4, 6-2. Vanderdys is 6-2 this fall season.
Freshman Monica Milewski won both her matches on Sunday in the consolation bracket improving to 6-2 overall this season and in Flight II, junior Martina Sedivec and sophomore Veera Nurmi each tallied two victories apiece in their respective consolation brackets. Nurmi is 5-3 and Sedivec 4-4 this fall.
The CU women are idle until the ITA Regional Championships at Salt Lake City on Oct. 20-23.
