CU Shuts Down Puerto Rico-Mayaguez 90-42

GUAYNABO, P.R. -Â Colorado sophomore Jackie McFarland had 24 points and a career-best 16 rebounds to lead the Buffaloes to a 90-42 win over Puerto Rico-Mayaguez Tuesday evening at the Mario Morales Coliseum on the second day of the San Juan Shootout, Tuesday.

           Colorado improves to 4-5 overall and logs its first win away from Boulder this season. UPR falls to 0-10.

           One night after scoring a season-low four points and fouling out early in the second half in a one-point overtime loss to Northern Arizona, McFarland returned to form hitting 8-of-12 from the floor and grabbing 10 of her 16 rebounds in the first half as the Buffs built a 47-20 lead. She eclipsed her previous career high of 15 rebounds set in the season opener against Cal State-Fullerton while capturing her 10th career double-double.

           Colorado shot a season-high 55 percent from the field (33-of-60) as all 10 active players on the Buffs' roster scored, including reserve forward Courtney Wallace who hit a late free throw to record her first point in a CU uniform. Junior Jasmina Ilic had 17 points and seven rebounds and senior Tami Garnett scored a career-best 10 points.

           Freshman Hannah Skildum hit a personal-best on the scoreboard for the second straight night, pitching in nine points and five rebounds against UPR. Skildum had eight on Monday against Northern Arizona. Sophomore Yari Escalera, a native of Humacao, P.R., had nine points, four assists and three rebounds. Sophomore Lauren Lubin had eight points, seven rebounds and six assists.

           CU's 48-point win was its largest since a 98-47 win over Buffalo on Jan. 3, 2003. It was also the fewest points allowed by Colorado since a 45-42 win over Pacific on Dec. 18, 2004. The Buffaloes out rebounded UPR 55-27 and held the Janes to just 27.3 percent from the floor (18-of-66). UPR was led by Natalie Emannuelli who had 17 points.

McFarland had 18 points and 10 rebounds in the first half while Ilic had 10 points and six rebounds. The considerably taller Buffaloes ? UPR's tallest player is listed at 5-foot-10, held a 31-8 edge in rebounding over the first 20 minutes and shot 57.6 percent from the field (19-of-23).

Aixanell Santos scored the first bucket of the game for UPR-Mayaguez, but the Buffaloes went on a 17-3 run over the next seven minutes. Â UPR narrowed the gap to 19-13 with 10:34 left in the period, but CU once again responded ending the half on a 28-7 run. The Janes never got closer than 26 points in the second half.
