
WOMEN's TENNIS UPSETS NO. 68 WASHINGTON STATE, 4-3

BOULDER ? Gleisy Torres Torres won the biggest match of her young collegiate career rallying from a set down and winning in three sets lifting the University of Colorado women's tennis team to an upset win over No. 68 Washington State, 4-3, late Thursday night at the Millennium Hotel Harvest House.
The match was played on four courts and took over five hours to complete.
Torres Torres, a freshman from Venezuela lost the first set 6-4, only to hold on and force a final set winning the second stanza, 6-3. Torres Torres then went on to triumph in the final set, 6-1. It was Torres Torres' third win in four attempts this spring and improved her overall record to 9-3.
Colorado took the early lead in the match securing the crucial doubles point and a 1-0 advantage.
The Buffs took two of three points with wins from Kendra Strandemo and Martina Sedivec at No. 1 doubles, 8-2, followed by the clinching match at No. 3 where Lynzee Kever and Jenny Hanson teamed up for an 8-3 win.
With a 1-0 deficit, Washington State evened the score at one taking the No. 3 slot. CU would regain the lead with freshman Veeri Nurmi winning her third straight match and improving her spring record to 3-1 (10-6 overall) taking the No. 4 singles slot in three sets.
However, the Cougars would rally once again tying the match at two only to have CU regain a 3-2 edge behind Lynzee Kever. Kever, the No. 76 nationally ranked player by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) won her first match at the No. 2 singles slot this year, taking a three-set winner, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1. Kever improved to 2-1 (8-3 overall).
The Lady Cougars (2-2) subsequently evened the score at 3-3 taking the No. 5 singles position in straight sets setting up the final match heroics from Torres Torres. CU's two singles points were won by freshmen.
"We knew it was going to be a tough battle tonight," said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. "It was great to get our first ranked win of the year and have two freshmen pull out two big three-set matches."
CU is at the beginning stages of a three-match homestand and will play Tulsa, Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m. also at the Harvest House.
