Schoolmeester Second In Mt. SAC 10k
April 16, 2005 | Track and Field
WALNUT,
Schoolmeester ran with the lead pack through the entire 10k race and with a lap to go Arizona's Robert Cheseret and Jason Hubbard (unattached) took a 100-m lead. Schoolmeester answered back by running the last 200-m in 27 seconds and was one step ahead of Cheseret before being caught at the line. Hubbard finished third in 28:37.64. The collegians' times rank third and fourth nationally following the race.
“It was perfect,” explained Schoolmeester. “We (head coach Mark Wetmore) had several goals and priorities. The first was to get into the NCAAs. Second was to run under 28:40s for USAs (USA Track and Field Championships in June). Third was to do it as easily as possible.
I didn't feel like I had to run too hard until the last few laps. During the last, I thought that if I was close in the last 300-m, I was going to go for the win. The pace was perfect. It sets up the rest of the season really well. Now I can focus on the 5,000-m and nationals.”
With five entries in the men's 5,000-m, just Billy Nelson ran a regional qualifying mark, a 14:09.41 for eighth place. In a pr 14:16.89, Jon Severy finished 28th, James Strang (14:17.11) 29th and Payton Batliner also ran a pr, 14:22.30 and finished 38th. Ryan Deak did not finish as the freshman lost his first shoe in the first three laps before kicking off his second. He ran barefoot for half the race before pulling out.
“It's not Billy's best 5k, but he lost a whole winter, so he's doing well from doing a lot of time away,” said head coach Mark Wetmore.
Hannah Warfield-Ruffato threw a 141-2 to finish sixth in the javelin. While the mark stands as a season best for the junior, it fell 4.5 inches shy of a regional qualifying mark. In the men's 800-m run, Jason Zichterman ran a season best 1:51.79, finishing eighth in his heat, 12th overall.
In the men's and women's hammer throw, Zach Hazen threw a 187-4, his second regional qualifying mark of the season in the event, to finish 13th while teammate Chase Mullen's toss of 170-6 was good for 18th place. Cortney Hutmacher finished 35th in the women's hammer with an effort of 141-2.
On Sunday, Liza Negriff and Carly Newlands will compete in the women's triple jump and shot put, respectively.
